The area through which the hike route passed was not sufficiently studied.
There are no detailed public maps of this area.
Igor appeals for help to a familiar geologist and pilot.
The geologist helps Dyatlov develop an optimal route.
The tourist club did not even have a map of the area where Dyatlov led his group.
It turned out that Dyatlov did not agree with anyone about the exact route of the group.
A route book was left without a route and a map showing the route of the group.
Dyatlov group discussed various options for the route and Igor to send the final version for approval, but he did not.
On January 23, 1959, at about 9 pm, the Dyatlov Group consisting of 10 hikers, took train No.45 from Sverdlovsk to the city of Serov.

Lyuda Dubinina diary

23 january.
It’s the last day of preparations and everything has been quite hectic.
From eleven in the morning I was scampering between stores buying different bits and pieces.
And I was silly enough to buy five meters of cambric which cost 200 rubles.
I was packing in such a rush and of course I’ve forgotten at home my sweater.
Everyone was busy with something, and we had so many things to do.
Just before our departure, those who wanted to say goodbye came to meet us.
We were really short of time, but arrived at the railway station with seconds to spare.
Then we had to say goodbye to everyone.
Before leaving we sang a few songs, but in the cart Blinov group joined and we continue singing together.
Among all the most notable is Krotov's bass.
This time there were a lot of very new songs that we were writing down with the help of an instructor A Zolotaryov, who came with us on the trek.
At first nobody wanted this Zolotaryov, for he is a stranger, but then we all agreed, because you can't refuse.
Thus, as we were ten, and remained ten, for Slavka was not released by the faculty bureau.

January 23
We're on the road again!
We are now sitting in room 531, or rather of course not sitting but frantically shoving into backpacks oatmeal, cans, canned meat.
The head of provision distribution (zavhoz) is overseeing that everybody gets everything.
Where are my felt boots?
Y. K. (Yuri Krivonischenko) Can we play mandolin on the train?
Of course!
We forgot the salt!
3kg
Igor!
Where are you?
Where is Doroshenko?
Why didn't he take 20 packs?
Give me 15 kopeks (cents) to call.
The scales, where are the scales?
It doesn't fit, dam it.
Who has the knife?
Yuri take this to the station.
Slav Khalizov just got here.
Hello, hello!
Can I get 15 cents?
Lyuda is counting the money, lots of money.
The room is an artistic mess.
And here we are on the train.
We sang all the songs that we know, learned new ones, everyone goes to sleep at 3 (am).
I wonder what awaits us on this trip?
What will we encounter?
The boys solemnly swore not to smoke the entire trip.
I wonder how much will power they have to get by without cigarettes?
Everybody is falling asleep, and behind the window Ural taiga is spreading in all directions.

January 24, 1959 In the city of Serov from 7-8 am until 18:30.
The train station, the incident - the detention of Yuri Krivonischenko, the 41st school, the story of mountaneering to school children of 1st and 2nd grade.
By train to Ivdel.
Incident in a train with a drunk passenger*.
*On the train from Serov to Ivdel, a drunken passenger came to the group, stating that they had stolen a bottle of vodka from him and demanded to return it.
He was simply ignored, although the physically fit hikers could have easily confronted him.
The drunken passenger insisted on his rights and initiated a scandal.
As a result, the conductor had to take the loaded citizen causing the disturbance to the police at the station.
This incident is interesting not only for what was noted in the diaries, but also for the record that the Dyatlov himself made when preparing list of provisions for the trek.
Yuri Yudin could not get alcohol and Igor made a record; vodka, Indian tea, matches.
If for some reason the hikers did not buy vodka, then it is possible that one of them could actually have stolen from the drunk passenger.
This is just a speculation.

January 24
7.00 (am) We arrived in Serov (town).
We traveled with a Blinov's group.
They have... things for hunting and other accessories.
At the station we were met with hell of a hospitality.
They didn't allow us into the building.
The policeman stares at us suspiciously.
There is no crime or vandalism in the city, as it suppose to be in times of communism.
And then Yuri Krivo started a song, the cops grabbed him and took him away.
At the attention of citizen Krivonischenko, sergeant explained that the rules of §3 prohibited all activity that would disturb the peace of passengers.
It is perhaps the only train station where the songs are forbidden, so we stayed without singing.
Finally everything is settled by end fo the day.
We are leaving Serov to Ivdel at 6:30 pm.
We were welcomed warmly in the school near the railway station.
The steward (she is also a janitor) boiled some water, and helped us with everything we needed for the preparation for the trek.
We have the whole day free.
We want to go to the city, to visit the nature museum or take a trip to a factory, but too much time is passed in distribution of equipment and cleaning it.
12.00 In the interval between 1st and 2nd shifts in school we organized meeting with pupils.
The room crammed with so many curious children.
Zolotoryov: "Kids, I will tell you now...
Tourism is, enables you to..."
Everyone is still, quiet, engaged.
Z. Kolmogorova: Tra- ta- ta- ta, what's your name, you went where, awesome, you have been camping, she went on and on...
Questions didn't end.
We had to explain and show to every kid everything, from torches to tents.
It took us 2 hours, and kids didn't want to let us go.
They sang songs to each other.
The whole school saw us at the station.
Everything ended as expected, when we were leaving, the kids yelled and cried, asking Zina to stay with them.
They promised to behave and study well.
In the train cart a young drunk accused us of stealing his booze from his pocket.
For the second time this day the cops were involved.
Discussion about love provoked by Z. Kolmogorova.
Songs, reassessment, Dubinina under the seats, garlic with bread and no water, and we arrived in Ivdel around 12 am.
Large waiting room.
Total freedom of action.
We took shifts to watch over our stuff all night long.
Bus to Vizhay leaves early in the morning.

January 24, 1959
Last night, about 9-00 we boarded the train №43.
At last.
There is 10 of us.
Slavik Bienko [slavik is short for Vladislav] did not go, they did not let him.
We are going with a Blinov group.
Fun.
Songs.
Around 8 am we arrived in Serov.
We were not allowed to stay on the train station, the train to Ivdel is at 6-30 pm.
We are looking for a room.
We are trying to get into the club (to the right of the dining room of the station) and school, but fail.
Finally he (? not sure about the identity) finds school number 41 (about 200 meters from the train station), where we were very well received.

Frame №12 is a very interesting "Old Flemish masters" style photo with Igor Dyatlov and Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle recognizable by his hat.
Above Dyatlov's head hangs Krivonischenko's mandolin.
Kneeled behind the table is Rustem Slobodin.
The way Krivonischenko cut out of the frame Lyudmila Dubinina could be intentional and telling of his feelings about her.

Lyudmila Dubinina diary

24 january went to bed We arrived in Serov very early.
We were not allowed in the station with the backpacks.
We settled nearby the station.
The boys cross the overseer, that's me, with accusations of stinginess and greed.
Alas, the canteen at this point is a great luxury for us.
There was one small incident - Yurka K. was taken by the police charging him with deception.
Our hero decided to walk around the station handing a cap for change after singing a song.
Yuri had to be rescued.
Then we managed to move to the elementary school together with Blinov group.
After lunch we began to prepare the equipment.
Decided to read talk to the children in 1st and 2nd grades about tourism.
They liked our stories and things very much, and they became very attached to us.
Time flew by till 6 pm in the company of our new young friends.
The children bonded so much, especially to Zina, that they parted with tears.
In the train we all sang songs accompanied with a mandolin and just like that.
Then out of the blue a young alcoholic came to the boys and accused them of stealing a bottle of vodka.
He demanded her return and promised to punch them in the teeth.
In the end, he did not prove or get anything and got lost.
Yurka came and sang with us for a while and left.
We sang and sang, and no one even noticed how we started to discuss love issues, talking about kisses in particular.
We talked all kinds of nonsense, of course; everyone was interested, everyone wanted to speak out, eventually trying to out-shout each other and prove their own opinion.
Sasha Kolevatov was the best in our debates.
Probably he expressed not only his own thoughts but, anyway, he obviously won.
We arrived at night in Ivdel and bunked at the station.
We settled in the corner, spreading the tent, and laid down to sleep at once.
I stayed watch.
I used the time to sew overshoes and copy songs.
Yurkina Olva from time to time shouted probably from boredom and hunger.
I lasted till 3 am.
At that time I lay down, only Borya continue to sew something for a long time, but he finally retire.
Zhenya (Yevgeniy Zinovyov) often picks on me, sometimes he even says offensive things.
He seem to consider me foolish.
It's my fault that I like to add fuel to the fire, damn me.

24.1.59
Here we are on a trek again.
Now in Serov.
The entire evening yesterday till 3 AM we sang songs.
With us is Sr. instructor of the Kourovka tour base Aleksander Zolotaryov.
He knows a lot of songs, it's just happy somehow that we are learning new songs.
Especially some the Zumba and others.
Today I feel little sad.
But it's nothing.
We are on duty with Rustik [nickname for Rustem].
We went and talked to the school children, then they all saw us off, even burst into tears, didn't want to let us go.

Bus from Ivdel to Vizhay - Doroshenko, Zina, Krivonishenko (center), Zolotaryov

Dyatlov Group diary

25 january 1959.
We got up at half past five, quickly gathered and left for the city of Ivdel with the first bus.
After an hour of waiting, we managed to grab a bus (such as GAZ-51).
The twenty-five-seater bus was forced to accommodate a full twenty-five plus twenty backpacks packed to capacity and as many pairs of skis.
We were full up to the ceiling.
First layer passengers sat on the seats, on a pile of skis, on backpacks.
Second layer passengers sat on the backs of the seats, finding a place for legs on the shoulders of comrades.
It was not so tight, however, as not to sing, so we did it almost all the way to Vizhay.
The trip was not uneventful.
The bus made a small detour away from the highway, in the village of Shipichnoe, and we were given the chance to step out, which we did with pleasure.
Four of the most agile went far ahead to the settlement of Talitsa to see the power station.
Suddenly the heard: "The bus."
We rush out the door, but, alas, it was too late.
The bus passed by and we were forced to chance after it as fast as we can, hoping fate would be merciful and, perhaps, we would catch up with it (I am part of the "agile" four).
However, the first hundred meters clearly demonstrated the advantages of a fifty horse power engine.
Our heels flashed far behind the bus, and the gap widened.
The prospect to walk about thirty kilometers on the highway with no breakfast and lunch already seemed quite real, when suddenly ...
I mentioned that fate is merciful.
The mercy came in the form of a girl going to Vizhay that hailed the bus and stopped the object of our persecution.
A minute later we were already safely sitting on the second floor of the seats and traveling to Vizhay.
We arrived in Vizhay about two pm. It turned out that we can continue our automobile journey in the next morning.
Warmly said goodbye to Blinov's group, who went further (to the west of Vizhay in the deep forest area).
After dinner, which was held in a warm "friendly atmosphere," we moved to the "hotel", which was the usual hut with three windows.
We went to the cinema, leaving "home" Doroshenko and Kolevatov.
We watched the "Symphonie in Gold", came back in "musical mood".
Now we are busy getting ready the equipment.
Tonight, according to the local commandant, we will leave on.

Kolevatov.

Zinaida Kolmogorova diary

25.1.59 arrived in Ivdel at midnight, spent the night at the train station pitching a tent on the floor.
Yes, we have already been spotted 2 times by the police.
Once Yuri Kriv was taken to the police station.
He wanted to raise money for candy.
It was funny.
Then on the train Serov-Ivdel reached Ivdel, spent the night at the station, in the morning got on a bus, drove to a hotel in Ivdel.
Then we took the bus and drove off.
We are 20 people, backpacks and skis.
Had to pile up on 3 levels, but we sang songs all the way.
Arrived in Vizhay.
First we stopped at the same club where we were 2 years ago.
Then we were taken to the hotel.
The whole evening there was a discussion about love about friendship, about dances and other things, etc.
I talked a lot about things which are completely unfamiliar to me and I scarcely do, but I tried, sincerely.
But this is all nonsense.
But again the words of Volt come to mind.
How well did he say it.
We went to see "Symphonie in Gold" so powerful! So great!

Lyudmila Dubinina diary

25 january We woke up, without really to have slept much.
I told Rustic that I won't wash up due to lack of conditions.
He agreed.
The bus came right away, we climbed quickly.
Had to travel on 3 levels.
Kolka Tibo (Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles) had to push his body to the ceiling, Olva first stood in (illegible word) position, but soon she couldn't stand it anymore and got down on her knees.
We sang again, of course.
I totally lost my voice.
Zhenka was bickering again.
He goes on and on.
Things stated to make sence, it wasn't really a knew, but it is now clearer and better.
But despite this, Yurka is still a good-natured person, at least, judging by his behavior.
I'm still true to myself.
Zhenka and Zina sang "If you eyes hadn't been blue..." ("Если б были глаза твои не такие синие...")
When we arrived at а turn the bus went to a village and had to return for us in an hour.
We continue on foot.
It was so nice to walk along the road in such good weather.
We went a little nuts and roll in the snow.
During our walk there was an incident - a car coming from the forest got stuck in the opposite direction.
Our guys rushed to the rescue.
Finally they pulled it out in half.
Then our bus came up and we hopped on it.
The discussion now was about happiness.
Basically our guys were the most active.
They tried to give a definition of happiness, but everyone had it its own way.
Arrived in Vizhay at four two.
Blinov group is going further to settlement 41, and we stay to spend the night.
We had a tearful goodbye with Blinov group.
The mood sank.
At parting, we sang with Zina and Zhenya: "If you eyes hadn't ..." In general I am very very sad.
We are extremely lucky!
The Symphonie in Gold was showing.
We left all our things and packs at the hotel and went to the club.
The image was a bit fuzzy, but it didn’t overshadow the pleasure at all. Yurka Krivo, sitting next to me, was smacking his lips and oohing with delight.
This is real happiness, so difficult to describe with words.
The music is just fabulous!
The mood after the movie greatly improved.
Igor Dyatlov was unrecognizable.
He tried to dance, and even started singing: "O Jackie Joe"
We are on duty with Yuri today.
We decided to cook noodles on the stove.
But it was very difficult to heat the stove with such raw firewood, so it took a lot of time.
Finally we began to eat.
During the meal, a discussion arose about the rights of boys and girls to freedom, etc.
In my opinion, such discussions lead nowhere.
But we are doing it anyway, to vent the soul.
We went to bed late.
Had to lay down in beds by two, only Yurka Krivo and Sasha slept on the floor between the beds.

Yesterday we safely reached the village of Vizhay.

Now we are taking a truck to the starting point - 2nd Northern.

The weather is nice, warm (~ 10-15 °).

Everything is good.

I am sorry I didn't say goodbye - got carried away.

Lyudmila Dubinina's premonition of her tragic death

Author Aleks Kandr and Sabine Lechtenfeld
If in other instances of telepathic communication both parties participated, clearly aware of their involvement in what is happening, then in the following example of telepathic contact between unfamiliar people, the power of telepathic influence is not so obvious, causing only a premonition and vague guesses of something fatal.
It will be about the premonition of Lyudmila Dubinina of her tragic death, signs of which, one way or another, appear in the records of her personal diary and in the peculiarities of her behavior during and after Dyatlov group pass through Vizhay.
Many authors of criminal versions of the death of Dyatlov’s group note the fact that the hikers were killed with extreme cruelty, as indicated by the nature of the injuries on the bodies of hikers discovered by search and rescue in a ravine in early May 1959.
This in turn suggests that the murder was committed based on the hatred of the murderers personally to those of the hikers who suffered more.
Only two members of the Dyatlov group were mutilated by the murderers with extreme cruelty: Alexander (Semyon) Zolotarev and Lyudmila Dubinina.
However, Lyudmila Dubinina had more severe injuries - in addition to numerous rib fractures on both sides of the chest, she had not only eyeballs, but also no tongue, according to the autopsy report.
Consequently, there are good reasons to assume that the main object of hatred and revenge for the murderers among all the hikers was exactly Lyudmila Dubinina.
Therefore, any researcher investigating the death of the Dyatlov group in the framework of the criminal version of a premeditated murder, taking into account the data of the autopsy report of Lyudmila Dubinina, should first of all examine all the materials of the criminal case relating to this girl in order to identify possible conflict situations with her participation, and this is primarily from the hikers diaries.
The version of the mystery of the murder of Dyatlov group is currently the only of all criminal versions, which has a documentary rationale for the possibility of a conflict between Lyudmila Dubinina and one of the employees of colony No. 64 under USh / 349-Ivdellag during the stay of the Dyatlov group in the village of Vizhay.
Dyatlov group arrived in Vizhay together with another group led by Blinov, and decided to stay for one night, as a result of which they spent in the the village almost a day from 14:00 on January 25, left for a ride only at 13:10 on January 26.
It is possible that the atmosphere of psychological discomfort that prevailed in the village.
Vizhay, had a depressing effect on hikers, which Lyudmila Dubinina partly reproduces in her diary: "We had a tearful goodbye with Blinov group.
The mood sank.
...In general, I am very, very sad".
In addition to this can be an entry in the personal diary of Zina Kolmogorova, who described the movement of the group from the village club to the hotel in Vizhay, carefully provided to the hikers by someone from the leadership of the settlement-colony.
Such participation in the fate of a group of hikers by the colony’s leadership is explained by the fact that Igor Dyatlov has a travel certificate and a trade union voucher, in which he addressed the leaders of Soviet, party and public organizations, “to render all possible assistance” in providing the Dyatlov group of hikers campaign XXI Congress of the CPSU, the opening of which was scheduled for January 28, 1959.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that Zina Kolmogorova formulated this movement as follows: "25.1.59…
We arrived in Vizhay.
First we stopped at the same club where we were 2 years ago.
Then we were taken to the hotel".
2xiN5jc.jpg
Even Zina's use of the words "taken away" instead of "invited to move", "offered to move" or something like that, in these parts at that time had a very specific tint, meaning, as an addition, "under escort" to the word "taken".
But this is only a touch to a very specific psychological atmosphere of the village.
Vizhay, whose inhabitants provided jobs for the colony at that time.
This specific atmosphere for this area influenced on a subconscious level, forcing to choose specific words corresponding to its environment. ("we were taken"), and not just words.
Continuing on, Zina notes in her diary a certain peculiarity of the influence of this place on herself: "I talked a lot about things which are completely unfamiliar to me and I scarcely do, but I tried, sincerely.
But this is all nonsense.".
It is unlikely that we will find out what is sincere and unusual for her earlier, Zina spoke at the hotel of the settlement-colony Vizhay.
Dyatlov group would be better to stay overnight "In the same club where they were 2 years ago", rather than agree to "be taken" to the hotel, Judging by the non-forest review of her in the general diary of the group on the morning of January 26: "Slept in the so-called hotel, some bundling 2 people on a bed, and Sasha K. and Krivo even on the floor between the beds".
dluf2FC.jpg
The canteen in Vizhay. Igor Dyatlov said with a smile: "If the tea is cold, then go out and drink it on the street, it will be hot."
That is, the group was clearly not happy with "so-called hotel", I think, not only due to the fact that her hotel service did not provide for the availability of a sufficient number of beds for all hotel guests.
The fact is that the hikers who returned in high spirits from the club after watching a movie "Symphony in Gold" On the evening of January 25, they encountered serious difficulties in preparing a hot dinner due to raw wood for the stove, as a result of which the cooking process took "a lot of time".
From the diary of Lyudmila Dubinina:
"We are on duty with Yuri today.
We decided to cook noodles on the stove.
But it was very difficult to heat the stove with such raw firewood, so it took a lot of time.
Finally we began to eat.".
Yuri Krivonischenko, who was on duty this evening with Lyudmila, wrote in the diary of the group the next morning: "We did not boil water in the morning, wood was damp.
In the evening it took us 6 hours to boil the water.… Krivonischenko".
Such problems in preparing a hot dinner for experienced hikers, even in remote taiga, were extremely rare, as follows from the entry in the group’s diary for January 30: "As usual we quickly start a fire".
Even if we take into account the possible exaggeration in the assessment of time – "6 hours", spent on the kindling of the stove, then the difficulties that arose in the "so-called hotel" Vizhay could ruffle any experienced hikers for whom it was not difficult to quickly make a fire even in the forest.
And given the difficult mental state of Lyudmila Dubinina these days, it can be assumed that the difficulties encountered in the "so-called hotel" she could be completely out of balance, causing a flush of fair anger and anger on conditions "hotel service", to put it in modern language.
Therefore, she could express everything she thinks about this in the most harsh terms to anyone responsible for this “hotel service” person, regardless of her rank and position.
This is in complete agreement with the opinion of O. Arhipov: "Well, it is known that Lyudmila Aleksandrovna was sharp on the tongue and principled.
She would not keep her mouth shut.".
This peculiarity of Lyudmila’s character is confirmed in her personal diary the day before the hikers arrive in the village of Vizhay: "January 24th ...
Yes, and I generally like to add fuel to the fire, damn me".
The negative superstitious potential of such a phrase, recorded on paper, could in some way “program” its further actions, determined by this striking feature of its character.
Confirmation of the inflated state of the psyche of Ludmila we find in her notes in her personal diary the day after her ordeals as an attendant in the "so-called hotel" in village of Vizahy:
"January 26...
Mood is bad and probably will be for two more days.
Evil as hell".
I.e. even the next day, Lyudmila felt a sense of anger, the degree of which she so uncompromisingly marked: "as hell".

Her expectations of improving her mood in two days obviously did not happen, but despite this, she nevertheless continued to keep her personal diary for two days.
Judging by the fact that from January 28, Lyudmila ceased to keep a personal diary at all, having previously recorded in her impressions of the hike, her mood two days after being in Vizhay not only did not improve, but was also aggravated by some kind of depression, fading interest in everyday trivialities of hiking life, which earlier made up the majority of her personal diary entries.
After visiting the village of Vizhay Lyudmila's psychological state deteriorated quite sharply, aggravating day by day, which is confirmed by the peculiarities of her behavior from January 26 to January 30, which are known to us from her personal diary and Zina Kolmogorova's notes in her diary.
In Ludmila’s personal diary, even on January 27, the first sign of some unconscious doom, expressed by the negative potential of the phrase, is encountered: "the last time", referring to the whole group:
"January 27...
Now most of the guys sit here and sing songs to the guitar, on the occasion that they do not work today.
It seems this is the last time we heard so many good new songs.
But we hope that Rustik will live up to the challenge."
"This is the last time we heard..." And how can you not become superstitious, listening to popular wisdom not to use this phrase, so as not to incur the misfortune.
It should be noted that on January 27th Lyudmila uses the word "it seems" before the key phrase: "this is the last time we heard", i.e. although she was under the impression of her forebodings, they still didn’t have that fatal doom which followed the next day, January 28, when Lyudmila completely stopped writing her impressions of the everyday life in her diary.
Only the presentiment of something fatal could have suppressed the long-term habit of an experienced hikers to keep his personal diary during a hike.
The possibility of perceiving other people's thoughts or feelings directed at the subject of perception has long been a subject of study - telepathy, finding confirmation from persons endowed with such an ability that it is not uncommon.
Therefore, at the heart of Ludmila Dubinina’s foreboding of her fatal doom, her ability to perceive her feelings of revenge related to her personally, rather than feelings of hatred, filled with negative emotions, fueled by the willingness to materialize them with a picture of the upcoming murder.
Considering that on January 28th Lyudmila completely stopped recording in her personal diary, it can be assumed that on this day the person who ordered the murder made the final decision to deal with the hikers, using associates from his inner circle, staging the killing of group members as an accident caused by the "overwhelming force" on Ural mountain ridge, with reference to the words of forester Rempel I. D. about the potential dangers lurking there for hikers.
It was on that day that Lyudmila Dubinina, previously so verbose in the records of her personal diary, completely stopped writing in it, apparently vaguely anticipating all the fatalism of the deadly threat hanging over her.
It is not excluded that Lyudmila Dubinina’s short but brief conflict with someone from the staff of the colony settlement of Vizhay over raw wood for the stove had its continuation already at the telepathic level of communication between the parties to the conflict, as is almost the case in life when the parties of an emotional conflict continue to mentally express to the offender everything that has boiled over.
I think anyone can remember from their own experience an episode of their emotional involvement in an imaginary continuation of a conflict situation after the abuser has long disappeared from sight.
As a rule, the conflict situation continues at the telepathic level of communication until it energetically disrupts itself in one way or another.
cCgPiwT.jpg
As we can see, even the next day, Lyudmila experienced a feeling of anger - "evil as hell", and this emotional negative could feed the energetics of her telepathic communication with those whom she clearly said too much (cut out her tongue) under the influence of her complex emotional state, known to us from her diary.
She was clearly unlucky because she dealt with a professional killer who had served for many years in the NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs).
With each day, Lyudmila Dubinina increasingly "went into herself", plunging into the foreboding of something fatal, apparently already fearful from the thought of presenting her fears in her personal diary, much less sharing them with her friends.
A possible culmination of this depressed state was a sharp, outwardly unreasonable, change in her behavior on the evening of January 30, which outraged the whole group.
As follows from Zina Kolmogorova’s diary entries, it was in the evening of January 30th that Lyudmila Dubinina lost interest in working together on patching up the holes of a dilapidated tent, apparently, already immersed in a stupor from the suddenly increased premonition of her fatal doom:
"January 30...
Lyuda quickly got tired and sat down by the fire. Nick Thibault changed his clothes.
He began to write a diary.
The law is that until all the work is done, do not approach the fire.
And so they had a long argument, of who will sew the tent.
Finally K. Tibo gave up and took a needle.
Lyuda remained seated.
And we sewed the hole (and there were so many that there was enough work for all except two attendants and Lyuda.
Guys are terribly outraged.
Today is the birthday of Sasha Kolevatov*.
Congratulations.
We give him a tangerine, which he immediately divided into 8 pieces (Lyuda went into the tent and did not come out until the end of the dinner).
A possible reason for such a sudden change in the behavior of Lyudmila on the evening of January 30 is the described in the investigation section of the Killers' Ski Route to the upper sources of Auspiya.
It is possible that the three murderers, having gone early in the morning of January 29 from 2nd Northern to the upper sources of Auspiya "took a shortcut on one of our forest paths" (words of forester I. D. Rempel), by the evening of January 30, they could have already achieved their intended destination, settling for the night in the headwaters of Auspiya.
For this reason, on the evening of January 30, they could mentally withdraw from the two previous days of a ski trip to the upper sources of Auspiya, focusing their attention on waiting for the hikers to arrive and discussing the details of their plan.
This may well explain such a dramatic change in the behavior of Lyudmila in the evening of January 30, because she was the main object of revenge, which riveted the thoughts of the murderers to her more than her comrades, judging by the severity of injuries inflicted on her later.
Mention Lyudmila in his personal diary "evil spirits" - "evil as hell", and to some extent "calling out" to her - "damn me", give the tragic death of Dyatlov's group some kind of ominous mystical connotation that actualizes the significance of domestic superstition:
January 24... Yes, and I generally like to add fuel to the fire, damn me to hell.
January 25... The mood sank. In general, I am very, very sad.
January 26... Mood is bad and probably will be for two more days. Evil as hell.
What can cause such changes in Lyudmila's behavior from January 26 to 30, which later became the victim of revenge in Dyatlov group murders (..., cut the tongue)?
The only plausible explanation for such dramatic changes in Lyudmila’s behavior can only be her premonition of an impending mortal threat, due to her ability at the telepathic level, to vaguely perceive the terrible picture of her plans being visualized by the murderers, which she simply could not want to believe, but the oppressive negative of this premonition had its influence on her thoughts and actions.
In any case, the diary notes of Lyudmila Dubinina and the peculiarities of her behavior shortly before and after the visit of Dyatlov group to the village of Vizhay can hardly be explained only rationally, consistent with the beginnings of common sense, without attracting the irrational component of human existence, bringing something ominously mystical to the tragic death of the Dyatlov group.
End of article
I have solicited an opinion from Sabine Lechtenfeld, forensic psychologist from Hannover, Germany on the subject.
What was tormenting Lyuda's mind in the days before the tragedy, was she feeling the impending doom or was she just a troubled soul?
Here is her opinion.
I thought long and hard about what kind of assessment of Lyuda's behavior prior to her death I could put together.
I decided that there is just not enough reliable material for a proper scientific expertise.
I don't want to go down the path of many others and pull an imaginary rabbit out of my hat, although it's very tempting.
However I will give you an assortment of my subjective impressions and tentative conclusions.
Let me start with the idea that some of Lyuda's behavior and her last diary entries may have been out-of-character and hint at the possibility that she had a premonition of the tragedy, or - as the article you sent me seems to suggest - may even have been in telepathic contact with her future killer.
If we are looking at a suspicious death, it's standard procedure to scrutinize the behavior of the victims shortly before their death and look for changes and unusual behavior.
But you have to adopt a pre-mortem perspective in order to avoid the fallacies of confirmation bias.
This is the key question: could we say that Lyuda's behavior and her diary entries are strange and different from her usual behavior - even if we don't know the fate of the group?
Unfortunately there's not a lot of material available for answering that question accurately.
Let's first look at the fact that she stopped to write her diary and that she decided not to help with some daily chores like mending the tent and that she isolated herself from the other members shortly before they all perished.
From the little we do know from her curriculum vitae and the various diary entries, I conclude that she was an intelligent and well- educated girl who was introverted and did not socialize easily.
She seems to have been well organized and honest to a fault.
Since she was the treasurer of the expedition this would've served her well.
And according to her own assessment she could not hold her tongue and didn't hesitate to speak her mind, which she regretted sometimes.
She also scolded herself for being socially awkward.
I looked at all available pictures of Lyuda and concluded that she was a serious and rather introverted person and did not smile easily.
I saw her most engaging and beautiful smile when she looked at her little brother.
I sense a bit of reservation in the pictures where she has physical contact - like a hug - with other expedition members.
Compared to the other members of the group her body language comes across as a bit reserved - although I have to attach the important caveat that she may simply not have been totally relaxed and comfortable in front of a camera.
That she stopped to update her expedition diary is indeed concerning, since keeping a personal diary on a daily basis was considered to be one of the essential duties during these expeditions.
But in order to assess if her neglect was totally out-of-character, we would need to know if she has ever failed to update her diary on a daily basis on previous expeditions.
That she failed to assist in some daily chores like mending the tent, also seems to be not compatible with what we know about her, and her attitude is duly noted by the other members in their diary entries.
But it's only a short notice and no one seems to have made a huge song and dance about it or kicked up a fuss because of her apparent moodiness.
Therefore it's difficult to say if this was a very unusual behavior for Lyuda, or if those members who knew her better were used to her having certain mood swings now and then.
If it is correct that Lyuda had been prone to mood swings, her behavior during the last days of her life may not have been out-of-character at all.
But the big question remains: what caused her bad mood?
Let's Look at her diary entries which many consider to be a premonition of the tragedy.
She wrote:
"Everybody felt really tired after the movie and wanted to sleep.
Zina and I lay on a mesh-work bed. It's a dream.
The lads rested right on the floor.
The mood is evil (horrible).
Seems it's going to be evil (horrible) for about two more days.
I'm mad as hell (as a devil)".
I included alternative translation possibilities in brackets ,since there are different possibilities to translate the origial Russian text.
The English word "evil" which seems to stick out here, has a different and more emotionally loaded connotation than the word "horrible".
What's really odd about these few sentences is, that Lyuda doesn't seem to give us the slightest hint, why her mood is so bad.
And this self-assessment of her mood seems to come totally out of the blue.
Before she wrote this down she told in a spirited and positive way about what the group has been up to during the day, and she and the others seemed to have enjoyed themselves.
Even the sleeping arrangements (she and Zina are sharing the only available bed) seemed to have agreed with her - if we interpret the sentence "it's a dream" in a positive way.
So, everything seems to be fine - and then she writes without any explanation whatsoever that her mood is horrible/evil and that she is mad!
Even without the benefit of hindsight this is somewhat odd.
But then she writes that her mood will be horrible/evil for about two more days.
This is very interesting insofar as she seems to know quite well what's the cause of her bad mood and when it will end, although she doesn't spell it out explicitly.
It has been suggested that she may have had her period or that she was in her pre-menstrual phase.
This is a very plausible idea since it would explain why she seems to know quite well, when her bad mood will end, and it would be such a private but banal and recurrent event that she doesn't bother to explain it.
Another possibility is that she is very discontent/annoyed with the current situation before the group starts to embark on their ski-hiking trip, and that she expects that her mood will improve once they start skiing and leave behind their current location and their people.
The following sentence "I'm mad as hell/as the devil" is also hard to assess, since she doesn't bother to explain.
Does she feel always mad/angry in connection with her period or other inconvenient situations, or is there something else which goes through her head while she's lying on her bed which angers or upsets her greatly?
Frankly, this sentence doesn't seem to be a vague premonition of doom, which she cannot figure out.
To me it seems that she knows quite well what exactly is upsetting her.
Unfortunately we will never know what it was.
Therefore my next thoughts are purely speculative:
Is it possible that she spotted something in her current location and situation which struck her in a very negative way?
Did she notice something which struck her as being bad and not ok, but she hesitates to put it down in writing?
If this continued to bother her while she mulled it over, it could explain why she was so occupied with these thoughts that she didn't even continue to use her diary.
She may literally have stopped speaking her mind.
Since she anticipates that her mood will be better within two days I conclude that her bad mood had probably nothing to do with the upcoming ski-hiking expedition and/or any specific members of her group.
But could Lyuda have noticed something which may have had a connection or even led to the terrible fate of the expedition?
She strikes me as a perceptive and honest person.
If she noticed something going on which wasn't right in her opinion she certainly might get mad and be in and "evil" or "horrible" mood.
But do we even have the slightest factual hint in that direction?
This depends largely on the correct assessment of the autopsy protocols.
Lyuda's pre- and postmortem injuries were more horrific than the injuries of all the other group members.
She didn't only suffer the most, but her eyes were mutilated and her tongue was missing.
If the missing facial organs have any significance for the case depends largely on this: were natural decay and small animals responsible - or was Lyuda deliberately mutilated?
Since the original investigation concluded (or was forced to conclude) that the Dyatlov Pass deaths were not the result of a crime, they officially concluded that the facial injuries were the result of natural decay and /or scavenging animals .
Some experts came later to a different conclusion.
But most experts seem to agree on one point: these facial injuries happened after Lyuda's death.
If this was deliberate but postmortem, then these mutilations were not the result of torture while she was still alive.
Since I'm not a pathologist I cannot decide which conclusion is correct.
But let's assume for a moment that the mutilations happened deliberately after Lyuda had perished.
What exactly would that tell us?
We could for starters conclude that the assailants stuck around until she died.
This is a very important conclusion because it would exclude all scenarios where after an initial wave of attacks all injured victims were left alone and then died without their attackers being around.
If Lyuda was mutilated after her death at least some killers stuck around and made sure that Lyuda (and probably the other students, too) would be dead or die shortly.
In a scenario of deliberate postmortem mutilations we further have to ask why this was done.
It has been suggested that Lyuda may have been the primary victim.
Personally I have big problems with the idea that all killings have been committed because someone was targeting Lyuda specifically in a personal vendetta, and that the other group members were just collateral victims.
Nothing we know about Lyuda's short life hints into such a direction, and to me it seems to be totally over-the-top and excessive that a personal enemy would take on such a great risk and kill all those other people just in order to get back at Lyuda.
It's also highly unlikely that the killings were the work of only one assailant.
But is it really plausible to assume that a personal enemy of Lyuda deliberately would recruit helpers in order to wipe out the whole group?
I don't think that this is a very likely scenario.
The reason that her injuries were more horrific than the injuries of the others could simply be due to the fact that she may have been more resilient, and therefore she enraged the killers.
Therefore she may have been savagely attacked in a final attempt to finish her off without using a weapon.
Also, the nature of Lyuda's postmortem facial mutilations are not typical tell-tale signs for someone having a personal grudge.
A totally smashed face and the mutilations of breasts and the sexual organs are far more typical mutilations if someone acted out because of a personal grievance.
However, the deliberate removal of tongue and eyes are a very typical icon since ancient times that the mutilated victim may have seen too much and was suspected to have talked about it.
It also could be a symbol that the mutilated victim will never again be able to talk.
Very recently the famous mobster Whitey Bulger has been killed by his prison inmates, and his tongue and eyes have been mutilated after he died, most likely because he had a long history as a police informer.
I don't want to imply at all that Lyuda was a snitch.
She strikes me as a person of great integrity who always tried to do the right thing.
But if her facial mutilations were not the result of natural decay and small animals, but the deliberate postmortem work of the killers, then we should contemplate if this is a tell-tale sign that she had seen something which she shouldn't have seen and which she and the rest of the students shouldn't talk about.
I don't reject the possibility completely that Lyuda had a premonition of impending doom, but we don't have any proof whatsoever that she was indeed psychic.
And since she seemed to think that her bad mood would become better in a matter of two days, I personally would exclude the idea that Lyuda had a true premonition.
I prefer a more rational explanation and think it's at least possible that Lyuda consciously noticed something going on in her immediate surroundings before the skiing stated, which bothered her greatly and caused her to be in a "horrible" or "evil" mood.
If she continued to mull it over, it could've continued to occupy her mind after they had started their ski-hiking trip, and she may have become edgy and withdrawn to the point where she didn't even bother to keep up with her expedition diary.
If she noticed something which greatly upset her, she and her fellow members may have been perceived as a potential danger for someone or a group of people.
In this case they may have been followed by their eventual killers.
If the ski-hikers noticed something, this may well have sparked their jests about the existence of yetis.
The last paragraph may seem to pull an imaginary rabbit out of my hat - or rather my brain - after all.
But it is a chain of arguments which is based on the assumption that Lyuda's facial disfiguration were the work of perpetrators who mutilated her face deliberately after she died.
If this assumption is correct it has great implications for the case.
However, if Lyuda's facial disfiguration were the result of natural decay and/or scavenging animals, the whole chain of argumentation is mute.
Personally I don't readily believe in telepathy without additional proof (although I don't completely exclude it from my world views) and it's not my first choice for explaining Lyuda's diary entries.
I believe in premonitions only insofar as they may be the result of subtle or less subtle hints which our brain has picked up and then subconsciously processed.
Our brain continues to work even when we are not aware of it - even when we sleep.
Great scientists often experienced solutions for their theories in their dreams, and the results of these subconscious processes can be very valuable.
But it was only possible because all necessary knowledge and information were already there.
Many gifted seers and clairvoyants work by picking up subtle clues.
But that's not what I would call a true premonition.
A true premonition would be if there were no informations and no hints at all available, but a person would have an awareness of things to come nevertheless.
While I don't completely reject the idea that telepatic communication and true premonitions are possible, I prefer to assume that Lyuda's bad mood had either nothing to do with the subsequent tragedy, or that she consciously or subconscioulsy processed hints and observed facts.
That may have led to Lyuda's so-called demons.
And I believe that her facial mutilations may be a hint into that direction - if they were indeed the deliberate work of the killers.
Unfortunately we probably will never know that for sure...
Ed. note: On Jan 27, 1959 while at the 41st logging site Dyatlov group learn some Mansi words.
Zina, Lyuda and Rustem make similar notes in their diaries.
The first word they write is "Я - ручей" which in Russian sounds like "I am a river" or with the dash "I am in the river".
Something that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you think where was Lyuda found.

On January 26 1959 Dyatlov group travels in the back of the truck in poor condition from Vizhay (13:10) to 41st logging site (16:30).
This is possibly the ride that makes Yudin sick.
Vizhay, wake up 9:00, the dining room, Zina Kolmogorova sends the letter home, Igor Dyatlov sends home a postcard.
At 13:10 the group leaves Vizhay in truck Gaz-63 with no brakes and shock absorbers.
They ride in the open back of the truck, covered by a tent.
The hikers were exposed on this trip and Yudin fell ill.
At 16:30 they arrive in the village 41st forest area.
In the evening they see movies "On his own", "Est takoy paren" and "Symphonie in Gold" (again).

Dyatlov Group diary

January 26
We slept in so-called hotel.
Two people per bed. Sasha K. (Alexander Kolevatov) and Krivo (Yuri Krivonischenko) slept on the floor between beds.
Woke up at 9 am. Everyone sleep well despite the fact we did not completely close the small window and room got a bit cold.
Outside temperature is -17 C.
We did not boil water in the morning, wood was damp.
In the evening it took us 6 hours to boil the water.
Had breakfast in the dining room, goulash and tea.
When they handed us the lukewarm tea, Gosya (Igor) Dyatlov said with a smile: "If the tea is cold, then go out and drink it on the street, it will be hot."
Original thought.
We negotiated to go to Settlement 41 by a truck.
We started at 13.10, and arrived at 16.30.
We froze pretty good at the back of GAZ-63.
While traveling we sang songs, discussed various topics like love, friendship, cancer illness and cures.
In Settlement 41 we were greeted warmly, they gave us a separate room in the hostel.
We talked a lot with the local workers.
I remembered particularly the red- bearded man.
The Beard, that's what his friends call him.
Ognev is an old friend, he is described in Lyuda Dubinina's private diary.
Lunch was served, we ate and now we are resting.
Some of the group is watching a movie in the adjacent room.
The rest of the group is rummaging through their backpacks.
Rustik (Rustem Slobodin) is playing his mandolin, while talking with Kolya (Nick Thibault).
I am going to do some adjustment to the equipment.

Hello everyone.
Today, 26, we leave on the route, we arrived well.
On February 12-15 I will visit Sverdlovsk.
I probably will not go home, so let Rufa bring linen to our room for a trip to Penza.
From there I will return on March 5-7.
Greetings

We slept in beds.
We got up late, very late.
Rustik and I are on duty.
We went into the dining room.
And then we waited for the car and drove off.
Today the road is not so beautiful, there is less snow.
We are driving off road now.
Drove for a long time.
I, as always, was approached by some countryman.
We arrived at the 41st settlement.
Workers are simply working here, not prisoners, but recruits.
There are many smart ones.
We were accomodated in the small room of the driver.
Today is the last day of civilization.
Rustic plays the mandolin very well, I really enjoy listening to him.
Today I wore Yuri's mittens, but how I did not want to!
I was told that is not good not to accept them, so I took them.
We talk.
Not much.

Luydmila Dubinina diary

26 january In the morning Sashka jumped up from the cold and said that he had a cold night.
Zina and I slept perfectly.
Went to the dining room then began to gather.
We go by car.
Tried to sing, talked about abstract topics and in general nobody was warm.
The surroundings were uninteresting at the beginning, a scorched forest.
In general, we had to go to 2nd North, but it was getting dark and we decided to stop at the 41st.
At 4.30 we were met very hospitably.
They stayed in the barrack, where the guys live.
In general, here are all civilians, there are no women at all, except two.
The guys are all young, as Igor noticed, there are even cute and generally interesting.
Especially memorable among all is Ognev with a red beard and the nickname of his "Beard".
In general, very rarely there are such people in such a hole.
A true romantic, a geologist and generally developed.
Many of the guys play the guitar.
We watched three movies right away: "On his own", "Est takoy paren" and "Sympnonie in gold" again.
And again this music Co First in (illegible word) were divided into two groups one watched the movies, the other wrote diaries, and Rustik and Kolya reasoned a little about everything, about work, etc. I like these guys.
A big difference between them, graduated from the institute Rustik, Ko, Yura and us.
All the same, their judgments are more mature and smarter than ours.
My God, I do not even talk about mine.
After the cinema, everyone was very tired and wanted to sleep.
We lay down with Zina on a spring bed.
It's a dream come true.
And the guys are all on the floor.
Mood is bad and probably will be for two more days.
Evil as hell.

Dyatlov group is in the back of of Gaz-63. Weather is cold and windy. They will try to protect themselves with a tent, but Yudin will still get sick.
Krivonishenko told the guys that he is about to make the last photo before he climbs into the truck so each of the guys reacted their own way.
Dyatlov and Thibeaux-Brignolles leaned forward and and showed Yuri the fig sign.
Apparently Zina Kolmogorova moved off the backpack on which she sat, her location was significantly lower than the previous shot.
Yuri Yudin painted a grimace on his face and looks at Zina Kolmogorov.
It may seem that he is making a grimace to Zina intending to scare her, but in fact, with his left hand he grabbed Zina Kolmogorova's back and tries to keep her from falling on her back.
Igor, Nikolai, Zina and Lyuda are looking at Yuri, Zolotaryov waves his right hand, Alexander is not visible behind Zolotaryov's back.
Doroshenko and Slobodin, without reacting to Yuri's signal, remained in their seats without visible reaction.

Yuri Yudin diary

26.1.59
We arrived by truck with no brakes, broken shock absorbers , etc., (only in the taiga you can ride on any car.) in the village 41 quarter.
Ognev, Nick? since 1931.
- long beard.
He knows the whole of the Northern Urals.
I was a participant of many geological expeditions.
Quite knowledgeable on many issues.
He graduated from the Ufimskiy Technical College.
In the truck (that) city we came, we brought 3 movies: "On his own" by Gorki, "Est takoy paren" and "Sympnonie in gold".
"In people" - under the usual circumstances, in the city, I would have never gone to see this movie.
It seems nothing of interest in it for me, waste of time.
Here - you start watching ... and from the very first frames you feel that the movie is new for you, you see it with different eyes than before and many new thoughts are rushing one after another under the impression of what's on the screen.
Grandma plays excellently.
Above all, full penetration into the role.
Wealth, depth, importance of thoughts, content, and all this follows by itself, without any imposition ... himself as in a life without words and simple ??? a person and there is another recently released picture.
Paren (est takoy paren - there is such a guy) - the characters here, the artists portraying, are represented only by what they say at the moment and is not clear where and how did they originated, what they say and what they do.
It seems like they (the characters) are created to say only these particular words, and there is nothing else for them to say, and to do.
Roles like that are not clear, maybe I find the screenplay weak and superficial, bad stage director, bad artists and in short - it seems there are not living people on the screen full of thoughts, capable of creating stories themselves, but some automatic machines tuned to a spec. program, and that's why there is no performance in the whole movie.
They could have said in advance what the movie is about, and how will it end.
The whole movie in 5 mins. "Symphonie in gold" - austr.
About ballet on ice.
The ballet itself is a good show.
Good skating rinks, skill, technical performance, but feelings, thoughts in dances - none.
Maybe since music to me is only an income.
It seems to me that way?
The light music in places is excellent, it can't be better, but in general I couldn't feel the Person, his soul.
Maybe that's why everybody that saw the movie was saying: "It feels so good, nothing is missing, they say "like life itself"
We are warmly welcomed here. they ride all kind of They gave us the only horse available here to take our backpacks tomorrow to 2nd Northern for free wood site about 200 150 km? from such a northern town as Ivdel.
There is no radio, no newspapers.
(They still can't check the lottery and I promised to send back the newspaper immediately from Sverdlovsk).
They live in a dormitory.
No order whatsoever, but people are everywhere.
Read everything that they can get their hands on and do they sing ...
Quietly, from the heart.
The songs are old, long forgotten or never heard.
Here they are ...
It's so good!
Why don't we sing such good, already forgotten songs.
And in general, we don't sing about the soul in places where there are some outsiders, it's not singing, not soulful, loud.
We must fight for the culture of choral singing.
Voices and change the repertoire.
So that there were no empty screaming song-trinkets.
Loggers are working poorly, work and life conditions are bad.
Are they paying poorly?
Strike.
Everything is possible, but there is no good intelligent leadership.
Master - once he studied and did not finish the Moscow Forestry Institute.
The workers are very different.
Recruits after the army, after serving time (to earn some money and stayed, or for free).
Many don't last, - they quit They work The majority has primary school or no education at all.
But there are widely erudite and even If you meet them in the city, you would never have thought that this person all his time in the taiga.
Uncle Slava.
Funny, somehow people do not think how this or that name will sound after uncle or grandpa *...
What a funny grandpa!
Until 1953, they threw in jail everybody that they could catch, innocent, then they figured it out and cleaned up, everybody was given rushed amnesty
*I think Yudin is referring to the fact Slava in Russian means Glory.

The river Lozva, the weather is gloomy, but there is no snow and no wind.
The group still consists of 10 tourist. Almost everybody is in the photo, but Kolevatov who we can see in the previous photo is to the left of the frame, and the photographer Semyon Zolotaryov.
From the left is Doroshenko, Zina and Lyuda, in the center is the horse with pulling the sleigh topped with backpacks.
The horse is led by uncle Slava, he stands and looks at someone behind the sleigh.
Behind the sleigh follow Yura Yudin, Igor Dyatlov, Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles and Rustem Slobodin.
In the distance behind is Krivonischenko, who is making sketches.
On January 27 1959 Dyatlov group was leaving 41st district and Ognev "The Beard", the hospitality, the warm bread, wrote Mansi words in their notebooks, and at 4 pm uncle Slava and his horse sled took the backpacks while the hikers were following on skis along Lozva river, pass Ushma river and to the 2nd Northern.
The head of the site Ryazhnev promised to help the tourists to reach the abandoned geological site 2nd Northern by finding means of transportation.
Hikers mounted backpacks on the sled with a horse, got on skis and reached 2nd Northern which consisted from 24 houses only one of which was suitable to spend the night.
The sled belonged to uncle Slava, convicted in Lithuania in 1949 for 10 years and released to the settlement in 1956.
In 41st district Yudin's condition worsened.
He had inflamed back nerve, sciatica.
To continue an expedition from third category of complexity was impossible without becaming a burden, so Yudin decided to return.
They discussed the matter and decided that Yudin will go to 2nd Northern and there will make the final decision.
If his pain subsides, he can continue with the group, if his condition worsens, he will take the drilling samples from 2nd Northern and return to Sverdlovsk.

Zina Kolmogorova diary

27. Today is the first day of our journey.
The backpack is not much but somewhat heavy.
Yes, Yura Yudin is leaving us today.
His sciatic nerves inflamed again and he is leaving.
Such a pity.
We distributed his load in our backpacks.
It turns out that on the last day we see some kind of civilization, stove, people, etc.
Today we arranged out backpacks to go on horseback and we are waiting them to be ready, and we will go skiing.
Everyone is singing, the workers living in barracks, did not go to work, they sing.
We sit and write songs.
Many workers are very talented, intelligent people.
Especially "the beard", his beard is ginger, ginger, and his eyes are also ginger, and brown.
The guys sing well.
And Rustic plays the mandolin very well.
Today was the last day me and Lyuda slept in beds.
Tonight we are going to be in a tent, apparently.
Now we are in the 41st quarter, today our goal is to reach the 2nd Nortern.
They say, there is a hut there, but no one lives in it. Hurry to the road, to the skis ...
How about we go?
I'm lately somehow very deeply affected by music, guitar, mandolin and other.
Yesterday saw 3 movies here "On his own", "Est takoy paren" and "Sympnonie in gold" again.
I want to see "Symphonie in Gold" even more times.

It's just Chusovaya.

Lyuda Dubinina diary

27 january Temperature is 5°.
Warm, skis are useless.
We are getting ready since the morning.
Today is the first day of the route.
Now we sit and wait for the horse to carry the backpacks, and we go on skis.
Fortune smiles at us.
Yuri Yudin got sick, something with a nerve of his leg, in general he radiculitis and he is going home.
So, there are nine of us in the future.
At the moment we are sitting and singing songs.
Guys play the guitar, Rustic plays along with the mandolin.
Catches your heart.
This is the last place of civilization, and it is rare that we met people like that.
Overall I love the guitar and I adore all musical people.
And the guys in general are all good, they dance, they are musical.
We talked with Ognev.
He knows a lot and is interesting with him, now he talks about where we are going and more like this.
This, in my opinion, is the most interesting object here on the site.
He has such a long red beard, although he is only 27 years, he looks older.
And then there is Valya, who plays the guitar well (many play) and about whom I jokingly said that I like him.
Now most of the guys sit here and sing songs to the guitar, on the occasion that they do not work today.
It seems this is the last time we heard so many good new songs.
But we hope that Rustik will live up to the challenge.
We learn some Mansi words from the guys.

Dyatlov Group diary

1.27.59
The weather’s really good.
The wind is at our backs, and the lads made a deal with the locals for a horse to drive us to Second North settlement.
But it will be about 24 km from the 41st Settlement.
We helped Uncle Slava unload hay from a carriage and waited for the horse (it went to get more hay and wood).
We waited until 4:00 PM.
The boys started copying some songs.
One man sang beautifully.
We heard a number of illegal prison songs (Article 58 counter-revolutionary crimes).
Before that we bought four loaves of bread.
Soft warm bread.
We ate 2 loaves.
Horse is slow.
What a pleasure to go without backpacks.
We covered 8 km in 2 hours. (River Ushma).
It's getting dark.
The horse is causing the delay.
Yuri Yudin is still with us.
He suddenly fell ill and he can't continue with the trek.
He wants to gather few minerals for the University and return.
Second North is an abandoned geological site consisting of 20-25 houses.
Only one is suitable for living.
In complete darkness we found a village and the house.
We started a fire with wood boards.
Smoke came form the stove.
Several people hurt their hands on old nails.
Everything is well.
Then the horse came.
We were talking and joking till 3 in the morning.
Doroshenko

Yuri Yudin diary

27 We spent the night in the hut of the 2nd Northern settlement.
There so much - many houses, warehouses, premises, forgot old vehicles, machine tools.
Everything was abandoned since 1952.
Here worked geological expedition what they could took out, the rest was exhausted and thrown.
The houses are all destroyed, there is only one with a stove and glass on the windows.
The place is picturesque.
Lozva river is wide.
Lots of lime rocks.
Uncle Slava says that in the summer you can cross the river, many warm, hot springs.
Sagebrush and water is not entirely frozen and there are places under the snow where water is not frozen after which we need to brake the ice from the skis.
Village Vizhay - camp (???) you can buy products.
Apothecary - artist Herzen ?.
German, wife is German.
Idyll in the family.
On the walls, relief paintings with filigree decoration, very masterfully, unusually finely executed.
Thousands of Chests - a view of Lozva in the summer and the same in the winter, more jewelry boxes, paintings - everywhere.
Big ones.
In the pharmacy - wax from red rose, fluorescent compound, Kremlin - from test tubes with fluorine. compositions, glowing. Built in wrist watch "Pobeda".
It works fine.
An unusually polite gentle, kind person.
Wife, German, very affable, hospitable They really care about the medicine.
For children, the best medicines are taken care of.
They beg me to send them penicillin in tablets from Ivdel, he has very little (for children), it is difficult to get good medication.
Boring, all tired of the lecture and something After all, it's so good from time to time to introduce a new thought, a new direction in the conversation ... especial

Dyatlov group diary

January 28
We were awaken by the rumbling voices of Yurka Kri and Sasha Kolevatov.
Weather so far is smiling at us.
It's only -8C outside.
After breakfast, some of the guys lead by Yuri Yudin, our well- known geologist, went to look for local minerals.
They didn't find anything except pyrite and quartz veins in the rock.
Took them long time to wax their skis and adjust the mounting.
Yuri Yudin goes back home today.
It is a pity, of course, that he leaves us.
Especially for me and Zina, but nothing can be done about it.
Started at 11.45.
We go up the river Lozva.
We take turns to head the group for about 10 minutes.
Snow cover is significantly less than last year.
We have to stop and scrape the wet, melting snow from the bottom of the skis.
Yurka Kri is behind and makes sketches of the route.
The bank of the river near Second North (especially the right bank) are limestone cliffs that rise high at places.
Overall the terrain becomes flatter, entirely covered by forest.
We stop to rest at 5:30 pm on river Lozva.
Today we spend our first night in the tent.
The guys are busy with the stove, sewing curtains out of sheets.
With some thing completed and others not, we sit at dinner.
After dinner we sit for long time around the campfire and sing heartfelt songs.
Zina even tries to learn to play mandolin under guidance of our musician Rustik (Rustem Slobodin).
Then we resume our discussions, mostly about love.
Someone comes up with an idea that we need a special notebook for ideas that we might come up with.
Conspiring, we started going into the tent two people at a time.
The suspended stove radiates heat and divides the tent in two sections.
The further section is occupied by me and Zina.
Nobody wants to sleep by the stove.
We agree that Yurka Kri (Krivonischenko) will sleep there.
On the other side sleeps the person on duty (Sasha Kolevatov).
Yurka couldn't stand the heat and after laying down for 1-2 min, he got up and moved to the second section cursing and accusing us of treason.
After that they still argued about something for a long time, but at the end all was quiet.
Lyuda Dubinina - this entry is not signed, but can't be anybody else but Dubinina.

Frame from the feature film "The Secret of the Mountain of the Dead" 2013
In this very film, Yuri Yudin says:
It was a sad farewell for everyone.
We went there with a porter and when he was already hurrying back.
Come on, come on, faster, so all goodbyes were rushed and sad.
They gave me a mascot, a teddy bear.
I still keep it, this mascot.

Yudin holding the mascot Lyuda gave him. Today, the teddy bear is kept in the Dyatlov Foundation

Zina Kolmogorova diary

28.1.58
Uncle Slava is leaving today on his horse, and Yura Yudin is leaving too.
He took a few samples.
I saw this type for the first after the drilling.
There is a lot of chalcopyrite and pyrite.
Last night the boys made stupid jokes.
In my opinion, if we don't pay attention to them, maybe they will be less rude.
And so far, nothing.
It's time to go out, but they are still digging and digging.
I do not understand what's taking so long.
The first 30 minutes are over.
Of course, the backpack is somewhat heavy.
But it's possible to go.
The first day is always difficult.
left forward
Sasha Kolevatov tested his device and threw it away.
Second halt.
It was much easier to go yesterday without backpacks
snow, snow, snow, snow
on the banks frozen river snow snow
Boundary stone.
Lunch was an hour at 4 pm
After lunch we did just one more hike and stopped to rest.
I mended the tent.
We lay down to sleep.
Igor was rude the whole evening,
I just couldn't recognize him.
I had to sleep on the wood near the stove.

Lyudmila Dubinina diary

28 january Woke up at 8 o'clock in the morning to someone's talk.
It turns out to be Yuri Krie and Sasha Kolya.
The weather is as warm as yesterday (t ° -8 °) Eat, h
After breakfast, some of the guys Yura Yudin, Kolya and Yura Doroshenko went for the rocks in the core storage, where they decided to collect minerals for the collection.
Nothing but pyrite, and there were no quartz veins in the rock.
Gathered for a long time, prepared rations, greased the skis then

Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle decided to sit down.
However, the bench was too close to the wall and the backpack on his back pushed against the wall.
As a result, Kolya sat down on the edge of the bench, his skis drove off and he fell to the ground along with the bench.
The fall made everyone laugh, a smile appeared even on his face.
25081068457_daaf9a150f_o.jpg
Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle lies, smiles and looks at the photographer.
Next to it stands Yudin, in his right hand holds a sample core.
Yuri pulled out a bench from Nicholas and put it back to the wall.

Parting with Yuri Yudin, they will never see each other again.
Igor Dyatlov on the left.
His backpack looks heavy.
Lyuda Dubinina hugs Yuri Yudin goodbye.
Despite the fact that her backpack is big, it does not seem to be heavy.
Lyuda had a bullet wound to her leg and the guys on the trek apparently tried to lighten her backpack as much as possible.
On the right, Kolya is behind Lyuda, he smiles and looks at Lyuda's farewell scene with Yudin.

Farewell Yura Yudin with Zina Kolmogorova.
Yudin looks at Zina and makes a movement to hug her waist.
Zina, smiling, looks at Yudin and makes a counter motion to hug at his neck.
Zolotaryov is looking at Zina, he is skiing, ski poles are in his hands.
Backpack is on his back, although not visible but the strap is (and an ice ax or a spare ski pole).

When Zina and Yura huged Zina's heavy backpack pulled her back, the skies went slid forward and Zina lost balance and fell on her back.
Yura Yudin is helping Zina to get back on her feet with her heavy backpack.

Dyatlov group will never be seen alive.
25081064377_e2eaa758aa_o.jpg
A photo showing the bank collapsed from being washed by the waters of river Lozva.
This is a controversial photo that is used to show Mansi sanctuary and petroglyphs.
The fact is that this photo is made on Jan 28 , and Dyatlov group passed by Ushminskaya cave on the day before, Jan 27.
25081063587_7ce6535c70_o.jpg
The first day of the ski trip, the tourists were tired and stretched out along the route, it was decided to make the first stop.
In the distance, five figures of hikers walking along the Lozva are visible.

Igor Dyatlov is holding a camera or compass in his hands.
Three hikers are looking at Rustem, obviously he says something and they listen attentively, could be what camera shutter speed to use in such weather conditions, to get good shots.

On January 29, 1959, the men of the group took turns to cut a trail for 10 mins, and the group was taking a break after all 7 rotated.
They stopped every 70 mins (2-3 km).
They turn on Auspiya river tributary.
The group stopped for lunch at the fourth halt.
They followed a Mansi ski trail and soon started seeing Mansi signs and storage platform (labaz).
Dyatlov group spent the night at the river Hoysipulsos (Хойсиспалсос) tributary.
It's Yuri Doroshenko's birthday.
He turned 21.

Zina Kolmogorova diary

29.1.59
Today is Yurka's birthday.
We go first to Lozva then we turn to Auspiya.
Surroundings are beautiful.
Along the Auspiya Mansi have passed.
A trail is visible, grooves, a path is visible.
We often see Mansi signs on the trail.
I wonder what they write about?
Now the Mansi trail goes South.
(note: the turn is the sketch of the notch, the initials with the date Oct. 5, 1958, the drawing of the ax?)
Now we sit the three of us: Rustik, Yurka and I Waiting for the rest.
For the night stopped near the ski tracks.
We are burning firewood with Yurka.
We talked about the past.
Such a playboy.

1.29.59
Second day of our hike.
We made our way from the Lozva River to the Auspiya River.
We walked along a Mansi trail. The weather is –13 C.
The wind is weak.
We often find ice on the Lozva River.
That's all.

Dyatlov group diary

30 January 1959
Diary is written in the cold on the go.
Today is a third cold night on the bank of Auspiya river.
We are getting used to it.
The stove does a great job.
Some of us (Thibeaux and Krivonischenko) think we need to build steam heat in the ten.
The curtains in the tent are quite justified.
We get up at 8:30am.
After breakfast we walk along the Auspiya river, but the ice again doesn't allow us to move forward.
We went on the bank on a sledge-deer trail.
In the middle of the road the saw Mansi shed.
Yes, Mansi, Mansi, Mansi.
This word comes up more and more often in our conversations.
Mansi are people of the North.
Small Hanti-Mansijskiy nation located in Salehard with 8 thousand population.
Very interesting and unique people that inhabit the North Polar Urals, close to the Tyumen region.
They have a written language, and leave characteristic signs on forest trees.
30.01.59
Weather: temperature in the morning - 17 С
day - 13 С
night - 26 С.
The wind is strong, south-west, snow begins to fall, heavy clouds, drop in temperature.
The temperature is normal for Northern Urals.
This is a story about the forest.
Mansi signs tell about animals they saw, resting stops and other things.
It is particularly interesting to solve its meaning for the tourists as well as historians.
Deer trail turns into а trodden path, and then ends.
To go without a trail is very hard, snow is 120 cm (4 feet) deep.
The forest gradually thins and trees get smaller.
Lots of dwarf birches and pines.
It is impossible to walk on the river.
It is not completely frozen, there is ice and water under the snow.
We have to go back on the bank of the river.
The day is over and we have to find a place for bivouac.
That's the stop for the night.
Strong west wind. It blows the snows off the cedar and pine trees, creating the impression of a snow fall.
As usual we quickly start a fire and pitch the tent on fir branches.
We are warmed by the fire and go to sleep.

Unknown diary

January 30.
In the morning it was 17 ° now it is getting colder.
"Volunteers" (S. Kolevatov and K. Tibo are repeating their duties as a punishment for slowing the group yesterday) took a long time to start a fire.
In the evening it was decided that we will leave the tent exactly 8 minutes after waking up.
Therefore, all have been awake and waiting for the command. But it is useless.
Around 9:30 in the morning we began the passive preparation.
Nick T. is joking about something in the morning.
Everyone is reluctant to get up.
And the weather!
In contrast to the rest of the warm days - today is a sunny cold day.
The sun appears playful.
Today as yesterday were are following the path of Mansi.
Sometimes Mansi writings appear on trees.
In general, all sorts of obscure mysterious characters.
There is slogan for our campaign, "In a country of mysterious signs."
If we knew these letters, it would be possible, without any doubt, to go down the path, confident that it would lead us to the right place.
Here the trail takes us to the shores of the river.
We lose track. In the future, the trail follows the left bank of Auspii river, but the team of deer crossed the river and we are going through the woods.
At the first opportunity we will turn back to the river.
As it is easier to follow it.
At approximately 2 pm we stop for a lunch.
Dried meat, guest crackers, sugar, garlic, coffee, stocked in the morning - that's our lunch.
Good mood.
A couple more hours - and we will stop at 5 pm for the night.
We have been looking for a place, then we returned about 200 meters back.
Charming place.
Deadwood, high pines, in short, everything you need for a good night.
2.
Luda quickly got tired and sat down by the fire.
Today is the birthday of Sasha Kolevatov *.
Congratulations.
We give him a tangerine, which he immediately divided into 8 pieces (Lyuda went into a tent and did not come out until the end of the dinner).
So another day of our trek went smoothly.
* Aleksander Kolevatov was born on November 16th, not January 30th.

Zinaida Kolmogorova diary

30.1.59 We go on Auspiya
cold (ayserm).
Mansi trail ended.
Pine forest.
There was sun in the morning, now is cold (ayserm).
All day long we walked along Auspiya.
Will spend the night on a Mansi trail.
Kolya didn't get to be a watchman so me and Rustik will stay on duty today.
Burned mittens and Yurkin's second sweatshirt.
He cursed a lot.
Today, probably, we will build a storage.
28212228359_33041ac47d_o.jpg
The morning, apparently the group's first break, stopped next to more signs on the tree left by the Mansi hunters.
Igor Dyatlov in the photo.
His jacket is dirty, camera hangs on his chest.
The cut-off tiny tree is clearly visible right below.
The trunk could be chopped by the Mansi hunter.
28212227329_e1f46b4253_o.jpg
Semyon Zolotaryov, his mustache is frosted, on the left side of his chest hangs a flashlight.
From the front and left, two backpacks are visible on the photo.
On the front backpack are fastened boots.
In the background, from the left, behind the squinting spruce stands a man in a light storm jacket with a black hat on his head.
Could be Juri Doroshenko who was wearing a fur hat, he probably waits for the rest of the group.
25120890887_6ea988cde5_o.jpg
Zina Kolmogorova draws in her notebook the Mansi symbols on the tree.
Behind her is Semyon Zolotaryov.
39991222771_9878911f7e_o.jpg
Rustem Slobodin and Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle caught up with the group.
Rustem stuck his ski poles in the snow and looked at the signs on the tree.
Taking ski poles underarms, behind him is Nikolai.
At the feet of Nikolai, there is a spare pair of skis on the snow, obviously a spare pair of skis was passed on to the change on the route to the one who was behind the column.
In the foreground, Alexander Kolevatov is sitting on the backpack and looking at Rustem.
Next to him is Simon Zolotarev.
On the left leg of Kolevatov, there is an object similar to the Igor Dyatlov's bag, in which there is a general diary of the group and the map, Alexander pressed it to his leg with his left elbow.
Obviously, Igor studied the further route, while they waited for the whole group to gather, and Kolevatov made the first entry for January 30 in the general diary.
Or perhaps the first entry was made by Lyuda Dubinina who (unlike Alexander Kolevatov) never signed her entries to the general diary, and then gave the diary to Kolevatov.
28212228639_9d111f1fe4_o.jpg
Sunny morning, the group walks through the forest along the Auspiya River.
Prior to the first stop, Krivonischenko was apparently the first to go.
After the break, the group reassemble and Krivonischenko is the last.
He took a photo of the trail left by the skiers.
25120891267_c5b73d5bb1_o.jpg
The group emerged from the forest on the river Auspiya, walking along the shore adhering to the right side.
First goes Igor Dyatlov, second Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle, followed by Lyuda Dubinina.
Igor stopped and looked back at the photographer.
On the back of Lyuda there is a light backpack, she walks freely with an imposing gait.
The weather is clear, the sun is shining.
Each of the boys is cutting a trail for 10 minutes, another 20 minutes and the group will stop.
39281407144_f1e093d2dc_o.jpg
The group is walking along Auspiya river.
Despite the very poor quality of the picture, the ski track of the group is clearly visible.
In the distance you can distinguish five dark figures.
Apparently there was a change and now the first goes Thibeaux-Brignolle, followed by Lyuda Dubinina, the third - it is unknown, the fourth is Zina Kolmogorova.
28212228119_90228b3d75_o.jpg
Sunny weather.
Next to Zolotaryov are two trees, the second one has Mansi markings.
Ahead of him are ski track - part of the group has already disappeared from view in the forest.
In the foreground Zina Kolmogorova is fixing her shoe overalls.
At the right of her are two backpacks, one of them is hers, and the second most likely belongs to Igor Dyatlov.

At the bottom of the second tree are harvested logs.

On this photo Slobodin is posing in a burnt quilted jacket.

We know it is not his because Zina writes in her diary: "Burned mittens and Yurkin's second quilted jacket."

When is writing in her diary Zina is usually referring to Yuri Krivonischenko as Yurka Kri (or Kriv.), and Yurka only is Doroshenko.

As everything else in this case this happens to be controversial too.

Krivonischenko, after examining the presented items, said that his brother, Georgiy Krivonischenko, owned the following items:...

All of the above items Igor Aleks. Krivonischenko identified with certainty.

So, whose jacket do you think this is?

The sequence of frames in film №1 is questionable.
The film is cut and it is hard to tell which frame follows which.
According to the sequence of frames it turns out that Krivonischenko's quilted jacket was burned in the night January 31 to February 1.
However, it is known from the diary of Zina Kolmogorova that the sweatshirt was burned in the night of January 30 to January 31.
There is a clear contradiction, only one of many in this case.

Dyatlov group diary

31 January 1959
Today the weather is a bit worse wind (west), snow (probably from the pines) because the sky is perfectly clear.
Came out relatively early (around 10 am).
Took the same Mansi sled trail. Till now we walk along a Mansi trail, which was crossed by a deer hunter not long ago.
Yesterday we apparently came across his resting stop.
Deer didn't go much further.
The hunter didn't follow the beaten trail and we are now in his steps.
Today was surprisingly good accommodations for the tent, air is warm and dry, despite the low temperature of -18C to -24C.
Walking is especially hard today.
Visibility is very low.
We can't see the trail and sometimes we have to advance gropingly.
All we can do is 1.52 km (1 mile) per hour.
We are forced to find new methods of clearing the path for the skis.
The first member leaves his backpack on the ground and walks forward, then returns and rests for 10-15 minutes with the group.
Thus we have a non-stop paving of the trail. It is especially hard for the second to move down the new trail with full gear on the back.
We gradually leave the Auspiya valley, the rise is continuous, but quite smooth.
Fir trees are replaced by wispy birch-wood.
We came out of the tree line.
Wind is western, warm, penetrating.
The speed of the wind is similar to the air draft created by a taking off airplane.
Firn, open spaces.
I can't even start thinking of setting up a storage.
It's close to 4.
We have to start looking for a place to pitch the tent.
We are going south in Auspiya river valley.
This apparently is the place covered with the deepest snow.
Wind is not strong, snow cover is 1,22 m.
Tired and exhausted we started the preparations for the night.
Not enough firewood.
Frail damp firs.
We started fire with logs, too tired to dig a fire pit.
We had supper right in the tent.
It's warm.
It is hard to imagine such a comfort somewhere on the ridge, with a piercing wind, hundreds kilometers away from human settlements.

The stream is not frozen.
Walking along the creek is not possible, large snowdrifts and deep snow.
This photo is possible to have been taken on January 30.

... It's impossible to walk along the river - it did not freeze, and under the snow, water and ice ...

To the left in the snow lies the ski.
Large drifts, deep snow, Nikolay fell into a creek under the snow.
39977503962_9cb2f02935_o.jpg
Nikolay lies in the snow.
The ski that lay next to it is no longer visible covered with snow, next to it there are two ski poles.
One ski stick plunged into the snow to the very handle, this indicates that the depth of the snow is more than a meter.
Some of the guys tried to pull Nikolay by the legs and pulled off his left foot boots.
39111370715_d0dbbe864d_o.jpg
Nikolay cleared himself of some snow and puts a black glove on his left hand.
Apparently it was his turn to pack the snow ahead of the group.
The group walked along the river covered with snow and at some point Nikolay collapsed.
39299833934_2d93394ecd_o.jpg
Nikolay got out of the snowdrift, got to his feet, put on his right foot boots and looked at the guys.
In the foreground, behind the branches, lies his backpack, next to him is a black right mitt, skis and ski poles.
In front to the left is a hole in the snow, probably under it is a stream.
25138517737_e7a98cc5dd_o.jpg
You can see tracks leading to the silhouette.
This is not somebody hiding in the forest going after the group, like Yeti.
This theory is Discovery channel’s way to justify a budget spent on a movie - so they had to offer an ending that will speak to the american audience.
In the states you can’t make a movie and not have an ending.
Please stop asking me about the “Yeti” photo.
This is Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle.
Ok?

Nikolay smiles at the photographer, although it's clear he is very cold.

The group stopped for lunch.
In the foreground is Zina Kolmogorova.
She stuck her ski poles in the snow, one of the guys helped her take off her backpack and put it next to her.
Zina took off the mittens and threw them on the snow, in her right hand she holds several pieces of sugar, waiting for Kolya Thibaut to give her the rest of the dinner.
On the left Kolya Thibaut's foot and hand, he sits on a backpack and distributes food to the hikers.
Yuri Krivonischenko, Lyuda Dubinina, Yuri Doroshenko and Aleksander Kolevatov.

After lunch, the group heads to the pass.
Bad weather, strong wind, blizzard, visibility is limited.
In the photo, most likely it's Zina Kolmogorova.
39977504142_b55eff9e9c_o.jpg
In the photo is Rustem Slobodin, on his shoulders there is a backpack with a pair of felt boots, a handle of an ax sticks out from the backpack.
Next to him is a backpack, on the far background from the right one more backpack is seen, most likely it's a bag with the tent.
The group stopped at the foot of the pass on the border of the forest.
There is strong wind, blizzard and low visibility.

In the foreground, without a backpack, stands Igor Dyatlov and looks somewhere to the left of the photographer.
His left knee in the snow, obviously Igor was kneeling when he took off his backpack.
From the left, behind Igor, is Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle, he took off his ski boot and looked at the photographer.
Resisting the force of the wind, Igor and Nikolay inclined their bodies forward.
In the background is Lyuda Dubinina, she turns away from the wind and looks around, looks at the one who follows her.
She has a small backpack on her back.
The presence of a small backpack on the back of Lyuda Dubinina.
She had a leg wound, so the guys tried to make the weight of her backpack as easy as possible.
Behind her another figure is visible, most likely it's Alexander Kolevatov.
The group came to the foot of the pass and stopped at the edge of the forest.
Around the small crooked birches and spruce.
The weather is very different from what it was in the valley of the Auspiya river.
On the pass there is a strong wind, blizzard, low visibility is bad at 100 - 200 m.
We gradually leave Auspiya valley, the rise is continuous, but quite smooth.
Fir trees are replaced by wispy birch-wood.
We came out of the tree line.
Wind is western, warm, penetrating.
The speed of the wind is like air draft created by a taking off airplane.
Firn, open spaces.
I can't even start thinking of setting up a storage.
It's close to 4 pm.

In Russian this photo is dubbed "Совет в Филях" or Council of Fili after a famous painting by Aleksey Kivshenko.
It seems like there were members of the group that were sent out to scout the pass, and they just came back.
Very interesting shot - it recorded one of the important moments in the fate of the group.
The tourists stopped at a halt, on the border of the forest, to put on warm clothes and prepare for further ascent in the mountain.
While the group was gathering firewood, Dyatlov and Kolevatov went further up to assess the conditions.
Igor Dyatlov on the left, talking to Semyon Zolotaryov.
Igor is on the skis, Alexander Kolevatov listens to what Igor is saying and looks at Semyon or at some of the guys behind him.
To the right is Semyon Zolotarev, he threw a jacket on his shoulders and listens attentively to what Igor is saying with a serious expression on his face.
Behind Semyon is Yuri Doroshenko, he goes to his backpack.
In the background on skis is Rustem Slobodin with a heavy backpack, with boots on top of it.
On the previous photo there was an ax sticking out of his backpack, now it's not there.
They are cutting wood for the night.
Rustem warms his hands in his pockets and looks at Lyuda and Nikolay.
Next to him on the ski is Zina Kolmogorova.
She is slightly bent forward and puts her left arm on her shoulder strap from the backpack.
Near Zina on the right, stands Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolles on skis, on his shoulders hangs a heavy backpack.
With his right hand Nikolay is helping Zina to put her backpack on her shoulders.
In the foreground, with his back, next to the dwarf birch, stands Lyuda Dubinina.
She warms her hands in the pockets of her trousers and looks at the guys.
On the snow there are two backpacks, one is Yuri Doroshenko's, and the second must be Semyon Zolotaryov's.
To the backpacks are attached brush and firewood for the stove.
The group stands in a small hollow on the edge of the forest.
From the right of the group is a small hill, on which grow dwarf, ugly birches.
Strong headwind, blizzard, visibility no more than 100 m.
This photo captures a key moment.
What happened here?
It may seem that Igor, as the head of the group, made a gross mistake, led tourists to a radial ascent without having made storage and the group was in extremely unfavorable conditions.
Here everything depended on the further choice of the route.
... Today, probably, we will build a storage. ...
Apparently, there was no certainty, Igor himself did not know exactly where they would build the storage?
If the group was going to follow the route; the river Auspiya - the river Lozva - mountain Otorten, they should overcome a pass and go down to a valley of the river Lozva.
The ascent to the Mt Otorten, by plan, was supposed to happen from the valley of Lozva river, but then they would not need need the brush and firewood before going through the pass.
The group reached the pass early, and during lunch, Dyatlov decided to stack up with firewood and go up the pass for an overnight on the ridge.
There was still enough bright time of day to continue the trek for the day.
Igor intended to raise the group with full equipment to Mt Kholat Syakhl.
There he planned to spend a cold overnight, then to cross the northern peaks of the Kholat Syakhl and descend to the valley of the Lozva river, build a storage and continue to Mt Otorten.
After careful consideration Igor decided that the exercise to spend the night on the pass will make more sense if they leave the extra load here.
On this photo is captured the moment when Igor is explaining to Zolotaryov his change of plan:
  • go back to Auspiya river for a warm and sheltered campsite
  • make a storage, leave an extra load
  • next day continue to Mt Otorten without descending from the pass. They would have already built the storage and left the extra load on Auspiya river. The standard route to go up Mt Otorten was from Lozva river. Dyatlov had a different idea in mind - once on top of the pass to continue on the ridge light from extra weight, trek easily on firm ice on the ridge of Mt Kholat Syakhl without loss of altitude, and spend a warm night on the lake, the source of Lozva river
  • make an ascent to Mt Otorten and set off on the return journey.

The photo is from Krivonischneko's camera film №1 frame №33.

On February 1 the Dyatlov group started out late, covered 2 km only and pitched a tent on the open ridge for a "cold" overnight i.e. without firewood.

It turn out to be the coldest night in their lives.

On February 1 the group started out late, covered 2 km only and pitched a tent on the open ridge for a "cold" overnight i.e. without firewood.
Dyatlov group had to prepare a note for the ascent to Mt Otorten, but instead they write on Evening Otorten №1, the satirical propaganda leaflet.
39995449222_289a87a938_o.jpg
The original is unknown. All we have seen is the typed copy in the case files sheet 31
The only written piece where snowman (or Yeti) is mentioned is in Evening Otorten №1, the satirical propaganda leaflet Dyatlov Group put together at the night of the incident.
The case file does not contain a photo of this flyer, only a transcript of its content.
26154416558_b453c799a8_o.jpg
We have to guess what their plans were.
  • They were carrying the stove and even though they did not used it that night it means that they were planning on using it at least once before their return back to the labaz.
  • They pitched the tent on the ridge although they had the time to go down to Lozva river. The only reason to do that is to continue in the morning on high grounds towards Otorten, where it is easier to ski on firm snow.
The conclusion is that they planned to have more "warm" overnight on February 2 at lake Lunthusaptur (Лунтхусаптур) under Mt Otorten where the source of Lozva starts.
They must have planned to make the note for the ascent then.
On the morning of February 3 make an ascent to Mt Otorten, and replace the note that was there with their own.
Then they pack their tent and start their way back.
They spend another "cold" overnight on February 3 on Kholat Syakhl.
On February 4 the group was supposed to go back to their labaz on Auspiya river.
From the campsite on February 1 to Mt Otorten is about 18 km.
Taking into account the return journey, that makes 36 km.
The group planned to leave on February 1 and return on February 4 to the labaz, the group had to take products for 3 days.
The upcoming route was r. Auspiya - lake Lunthusaptur - Mt Otorten - r. Auspiya.
They started late on February 1 because they waited for the weather to clear out.
They wrote Evening Otorten №1, built a storage (labaz), gather firewood for the return back.
Then after lunch, Dyatlov took the risk and lead the group up the the mountain Kholat Syakhl.
Dyatlov Pass is not where the group was headed.
The pass is the place to go over Kholat Syakhl if you are going to come down. Some people speculate that Dyatlov got lost and didn't find the pass.
This is not true.
The group didn't intend to go though the pass.
They wanted to gain altitude and stay on the ridge for a "cold" overnight i.e. without firewood.

We can see Kolevatov's Finnish knife.
Note how the tent is suspended on a rope tied to nearby trees.
From this photo and other we can speculate that Lyuda liked to hang around the the senior member of the group - Zolotaryov and Thibeaux-Brignolle.

Nikolay looks down and laughs too.

Protocols of item identification (Case files 233)
Krivonischenko, after examining the presented items, said that his brother, Georgiy Krivonischenko, owned the following items:...
8. Padded jacket blue, burnt...
All of the above items Igor Aleks. Krivonischenko identified with certainty.
Protocols of item identification (Case files 240)
V. N. Kostrulin, after examining the equipment, stated that the following items belonged to his friend Y. N. Doroshenko:

Loose photo with unknown origin
Dyatlov group setting up the tent for their last night alive, photo is taken around 5 pm.
Rakitin disputes this conclusion, we can not be sure what time were these last photos taken.
39995448902_a66235fb82_o.jpg
Loose photo with unknown origin
According to the Resolution to close the case where Lev Ivanov says:
...Dyatlov, as the leader of the group, made a gross mistake allowing the group to begin the ascent on 1.II.59, only at 15-00.

- 2 -

Later, on the ski trail, which was preserved at the time of the search, it was possible to establish that the tourists, moving to the valley of the fourth tributary of the Lozva River, were 500-600 m to the left and instead of the pass formed by the peaks "1079" and "880" they went up on the eastern slope of height "1079".
This was Dyatlov's second mistake.
Using light day time to rise to the top of the "1079", in conditions of strong wind that is usual in this area, and a low temperature of the order of 25-30°C, Dyatlov group found themselves at unprofitable conditions for spending the night and decided to pitch the tent on a slope of height "1079" so that in the morning of the next day, without losing altitude, go to the Mt. Otorten, to which the distance in straight line remained about 10 km.
In one of the cameras the last frame shows the moment of excavation of snow for the installation of the tent.
Considering that this frame was shot with an exposure of I/25 seconds, with a diaphragm of 5.6 at a film sensitivity of 65 Un. GOST, and taking into account the density of the frame, we can assume that the tourists started the installation of the tent around 5 pm 1.II.59.
A similar picture was taken with another camera.
After this time, no records and no photos were found.”
Rakitin disputes Ivanov's examination of the photos.
He says that Ivanov calculated the time based on their Sverdlovsk time and the position of the sun on the plain.
And Rakitin believes that in the mountains the sun sets earlier and therefore it is necessary to make allowances.
Photographers believe that according to such characteristics as ISO, aperture and shutter speed (shutter speed 1 / 25s, with aperture of 5.6, with a film sensitivity of 65 UGOST), in principle, it is impossible to determine the shooting time, because on a clear and cloudy day you will have different camera settings at the same time.
You can determine the time of shooting only if you have a clear shadow and you clearly know the direction of North-South, based on the concept of astronomical midday and the movement of the sun 15 degrees per hour.
There are no shadows on these photos and orientation is not known.
So time can not be set in principle.
On February 2 the group was supposed to cover 14 - 14.5 km on a firm snow, reach lake Lunthusaptur and to have a "warm" overnight.
That's way they took the stove with them and was found in the tent, not used on the tragic night of February 1.
What happened on the night of February 1959 will haunt us till this day.

Sasha - the only surviving child of the group is with unknown whereabouts
Emotional story by Galina Sazonova, Doctor pediatrician and Dyatlov case researcher
This article is the result Galina Sazonova's exhaustive detective work.
Until now, it was not known that a child had survived any of the victims.
The narrative starts as a matter of fact exposé but the author shows soon enough her sentiment to the characters involved and reveals her true feelings on the topic.
At the moment she is maybe the person who knows best Semyon Zolotaryov's background.
Galina Sazonova is deeply emotionally bound to keep going further.
BtxGRyO.jpg
Baby Sasha
Semyon's son Sasha is born on February 10, 1956, in Lermontovo, Russian Federation.
Semyon's wife's name is Tamara.
Her identity is known, but it is not published because her children still live in a small town and do not want attention from neighbors and gossip about their mother.
Tamara has four daughters.
The eldest was born before Sasha, and three after.
Sasha would be the fifth child.
All the daughters were born out of wedlock and had the mother's surname.
With that, she had a second civil husband after Semyon, and they lived happily with him all his life, and all her children are very fond of him.
Tamara was very worried about Sasha her whole life.
She always began to cry from mentioning his name.
It was Her tragedy.
Her daughters always knew that there was a brother, this was not hidden from them, but the topic was not discussed in the family because there was a very painful reaction from her.
Z9gwP60.jpg
Zolotaryov's common law wife Tamara, baby Sasha and stepdaughter Lyudmila Komova
You can't start to imagine how intelligent, educated, tactful, and successful her daughters are.
They speak of their mother with a lot of love and compassion, admitting the fact that Sasha was given away and not understanding how this could happen.
This is not an antisocial family, and this is not the woman who is just so ready to give up her child.
She did everything she could to raise beautiful daughters.
Tamara and her second husband were looking for Sasha.
The eldest daughter remembers the moment when all in tears, Tamara carried Sasha.
He was about a year old.
She put him on the porch of a house and hid the girl in bushes so that she would be on the lookout Sasha not to fall from the porch or crawl away.
The door opened, Sasha was taken.
It was a private house.
The daughter is sure that it was Semyon's house and that Semyon's mother opened the door. Before this happened, Tamara and Semyon quarreled, and he left.
The daughter didn't like Semyon, although she remembers him well.
She doesn't remember any tattoos.
He was strict with her, but at the same time, she doesn't mention any violence towards her (raising a hand or verbal abuse).
But she remembers very well how he forced her to eat all her food.
This was very typical after the war.
I couldn't stand my grandma because my sister and I could not leave the table until we finished it all, including crumbs of bread, which fell on the table.
My grandmother survived the siege of Leningrad from the first to the last day.
Only later did I understand why she did what she did. Semyon, aged 11, survived the Holodomor and the famine of 1945-46.
OHJ0HCJ.jpg
Tamara
Tamara loved Semyon very much.
At the same time, she hated him her whole life.
Tamara also fought during the war.
This is what is known from Tamara's daughters.
It is clear that all memories can be smoothed, especially childhood memories.
Even more the daughters will protect their mother because they love her.
Now looking at it objectively hear is what I do not understand.
Everything happened in a very small village of Lermontovo, also closed to outsiders, since uranium was extracted on its territory.
All those who came to work in this city were investigated.
The village was recently founded, and everyone lived in barracks.
Those in one longhouse have many rooms and one family (no matter how many people) lives in one room.
All have a shared toilet, a corridor, a kitchen.
There are many neighbors.
I don't understand how it is possible to explain to the neighbors where did the child go.
Neighbors could not help but notice.
The same goes for the Semyon's family, how could the child disappear without anybody noticing, they lived in barracks too.
At that time in the Soviet Union, the children were looked at very fondly (they were a great asset), especially in the territories that were occupied by the Germans.
You might not know, but in the village of Udobnoy, where Semyon is from, there was a German hospital for which children were selected, their blood was pumped out, and their bodies were thrown into a pit behind the hospital.
After liberation, they found in the ground bodies of women, with bullet holes in their heads, embracing their children.
A child at that time was considered sacred.
One would wonder why is Semyon in the photos surrounded by women.
Because there were no men (muzhiks).
Twenty-five million men of childbearing age perished.
There was an extreme demographic bias.
Women did not hope to get married, but they wanted to have children at least.
Therefore, at that time, there was a government decree, on the support of single mothers financially.
Perhaps this is the reason why none of Tamara's daughters had an official father and why Semyon was not put on the birth certificate.
Tamara received money for this under a program that stimulates fertility.
They all lived very poorly.
It is now difficult for us to imagine how difficult it was back then to make ends meet.
Considerations to understand the time and place:
  • The rejection of the child threatened Tamara to be condemned by society. A strong condemnation could end up with dismissal from work. That didn't happen. She had to have a "storefront" story for neighbors and colleagues.
  • The legal moment. Not only that she gave up the child, but she had to make out a number of legal documents - to write him out from the place of living, from the kindergarten, from the children's polyclinic, and so on. Everywhere she to give some reason, why is she doing it. There was very strict control at the time.
  • If she gave him up to an orphanage and relinquished her rights of a parent - the condemning information had to be sent to her place of work and there she had to be reproved at meetings of the work collective and, as a rule, became immediately known to the whole community. And there was always a woman nearby who couldn't have a child or husband. But then the child could be quickly adopted.
  • If she didn't relinquish her rights of a parent but simply abandoned the child somewhere, then this child was transferred to an orphanage, but was listed as "lost". There was a search for parents, and it could last a lifetime until the child grew up. Such children were kept in the orphanage. They could not be given up for adoption because orphanhood was not confirmed, and there was no relinquishment of the rights from the parents.
The most realistic option to bypass all legal and social difficulties was to give the child to be brought up in the village to some relatives.
It was allowed because life was difficult.
But the thing is that if she gave Sasha to Semyon's mom or Semyon himself, it was impossible to live in one small village and not meet with her son.
So Sasha was clearly taken from Lermontovo.
And if Tamara wanted to search for him, she wouldn't know where to look.
Now there was information from Semyon's niece, Alla Borovikovskaya, that when they were looking for Sasha, they were told "you can't find him, he is in Germany".
I'm not very sure that there was cross-border adoption at that time, so most likely, they are talking of Soviet citizens who worked or served in Germanyat that time.
Those who had the right to live there as families were few.
There is a hope that this can be reflected in some archives in Germany, lists of diplomatic workers, or military specialists.
The problem is that if Sasha was adopted at the age of one year, he could completely change his name and even his date of birth.
And he may not even know about the fact that he is adopted.
Although at that time, it was not normal to hide this information from the child.
Too many children were adopted, and it was considered normal.
Alla Borovikovskaya is a foster child in Zolotaryov's family herself.
The next day after the exhumation, I was alone in the cemetery.
The sun was shining, although it was cold.
I went to church, put a candle for Semyon, and, waiting for the car, just walked along the rows of graves.
I heard a bell chiming.
And suddenly, I had a revelation that I had to find Semyon's son and make him come to the grave of his father.
Semyon needs this, he is asking for it.
It was like a bright light behind my eyes in contrast to the darkness of the grave I was staring all day long.
There are many theories about Semyon.
It so happened that no one knows about him as much as I do.
He was a complicated man with a very uneasy fate, but at the same time, I have a strong feeling that he was an extraordinarily decent and kind person.
I can talk indefinitely about Semyon.
Perhaps you have heard enough for the time being.

February 2 - birthdate of Zolotaryov - the enigma of Dyatlov group
Semyon Zolotaryov with a bag of provisions in city of Serov - 24 Jan 1959 Born on Feb. 2, 1921, Russian Federation
He was the oldest and also the most mysterious member of the group.
He asked to called Sasha and that's the name he appears in many documents and memoirs.
In fact, his given name is Semyon and came from the North Caucasus (from the Kuban Cossacks, from the village of Udobnoy on the border with the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic), where he regularly went to his mothers.
Born in the family of a paramedic, he belonged to the generation most affected by the Great Patriotic War.
The draft of 1921-22 had only about 3% survival rate.
Semyon went through the entire war in the Armed Forces from October 1941 to May 1946.
He became a candidate member of the CPSU ( b in 1944, was a Komsomol functionary of a battalion, joined the party after the war.
Had 4 military awards. Semyon Zolotaryov's military past has a special role in the events of the tragic night.
After the war, Semyon tried to continue his military career - in June 1945 he entered the Moscow Military Engineering School, which, however, almost immediately underwent a reduction.
In April 1946, Zolotaryov transferred to the Leningrad Military Engineering School as part of the course, but apparently it was not meant for him to serve in the army, as this school was cut down as well.
In the end, Semyon Zolotaryov found himself at the Minsk Institute of Physical Education (GIFKB), which he successfully graduated in 1951.
In the mid-50's he worked as a tourist instructor at the tourist center "Artybash" (Altai), then moved to the Sverdlovsk region, where he got a job as a senior tourism instructor at the Kourovka camp site.
However, before the very hike to Otorten, along with the group of Igor Dyatlov, Zolotaryov left Kourovka.
He was single, which looked rather unusual for that time, had tattoos and gold false teeth (the latter indicated the prosperity of their owner, in those years the main material of dental prostheses was steel).
Zolotaryov's tattoos are very interesting, among them there were images of a five-pointed star, strange shape like beets-heart-fire (in the case files says beets), the name "Гена" (Guena), his year of birth "1921", ДАЕРММУАЗУАЯ (DAERMMUZAUAYA), "Г+С+П=Д", this was common among Soviet soldiers who served together for a long time.
Russian letter "Д" stands for "дружба" (friendship).
The three letters were first letters of the three soldiers.
"С" stood for "Семен", Semyon in Russian.
Others two names are unknown.
Then we have "Г + С", as well as individual letters "C" next to the star and beets-heart-fire.
Most of Zolotaryov's tattoos were hidden by clothing and the rest of the Dyatlov group members didn't know anything about them.
He died on his 38th birthday.
Zolotaryov is buried on May 12, 1959, in Ivanovskoe Cemetery, Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia.

On this photo we see the discussion between Igor Dyatlov and Semyon Zolotaryov. The rest of the group don't seem to care much.
Zolotariov made Lyuda uneasy: she suspected that he felt used to being in charge, and wondered if that might be a problem.
The fact that the group now included one leader aged 23 and one aged 37 could cause some tension.
On the day of their departure January 23, she wrote in her diary: "At first, no one wanted him in the group because he’s complete stranger, but then we got over it and he’s coming.
We couldn’t just refuse to take him."
Everyone knew that the inclusion of this stranger in the group had been orchestrated by the local Communist Party Committee.
Fellow student Valentin Bogomolov recalls how eager the Zolotaryov was to finish the trek as soon as possible, giving the impression he was in a big hurry to perform some other duty afterwards.
During the trek the students seem to have accepted and bonded to Zolotaryov.
He knew new songs which is always impressive, and being form different generation and walk of life, Zolotaryov had knowledge about things that was interesting to the rest of the group.
Zolotaryov participated but also kept his distance, he was with them for the trek, but then he knew that he will be off on his way.
He didn't try to impose or correct.
Not until the circumstances called for survival, and then the group split in two under the cedar tree.
Igor Dytalov and Zina Kolmogorova went off in one direction, we don't know if Slobodin was conscious and if he made it to the cedar tree at all.
Lyuda, Kolevatov, Thibeaux-Brignolle and Zolotaryov headed further into the ravine where most probably it was Zolotaryov's idea to dig up a den and prepare for overnight in the snow.
His mobilization when being attacked and switching into a survival mode is triggered by Zolotaryov's military experience.
Lyuda Dubinina who was reserved to accept him in the group now chose to go with him in the face of life threat.

The discussion between Igor Dyatlov and Semyon Zolotaryov on 31 Jan 1959
On April 12, 2018 Komsomolskaya Pravda, per request of the relatives, exhumed the body of Semyon Zolotaryov at Ivanovskoe Cemetery in Yekaterinburg for the purpose of identification.
The superimposition performed by expert Sergey Nikitin at the cemetery comparing the skull with a known post war photograph of Semyon Zoltaryov shows perfect match.
The first DNA test results aired by Russian Channel 1 on May 16, 2018 exclude kinship of the person laying in Zolotaryov’s grave with Zolotaryov’s niece Tatyana Skulbeda, daughter of Semyon’s sister.
Second DNA test, this time conducted by such an authoritative scholar as Pavel Ivanov, showed that the DNA of the person buried under the sign "Semyon Zolotaryov" matches the DNA of his niece.
But this fact does not exclude the version of other researchers suspected that under the name of Semyon his brother Nikolay could be buried, who, according to archival documents, worked with the Germans and disappeared without a trace during the war.
Therefore, we can not yet put an end on this investigation.
Komsomolskaya pravda journalist Natalya Varsegova said that there is going to be a third DNA testing in 2020 that will hopefully be definitive.

Why did Rustem Slobodin die first?

This is a speculative reenactment of the events outside the tent up on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl on Dyatlov group last night alive.
This story is based the following facts:
  • sightings of light effects in the sky are common for this latitude *
  • Zolotaryov and Thibeaux-Brignolles were wearing felt boots (valenki)
  • the camera found around Zolotaryov's neck
  • frame from Zolotaryov's damaged film
  • Thibeaux-Brignolles and Krivonischenko’s knives were found in their parkas inside the tent
  • Kolevatov's Finish knife was found inside the tent in March
  • The black plastic sheath of that same knife was found outside the tent in May when the snow started to melt
  • Kolevatov was wearing one felt boot on his right foot
  • Dyatlov's jacket was found outside the tent, knife in his pocket
  • Dyatlov's flashlight was found on top of the tent
  • Slobodin's injuries
  • Rustem's body was the only one with icy bed under from the hardening of the thawing snow. This observation and conclusion was mentioned in Akselrod's testimony, but he hasn't seen the rest of the bodies when they were found, so if Akselrod was the only one registering the fact, then the rest just might as well have icy beds that nobody testified about. At least we have one dying spot that looks like hasn't been doctored.

* Here is a statement of someone familiar with the region:

"I have lived a number of years above the Arctic Circle.
Lights, fireballs, and other strange luminescent events are common.
People in the lower latitudes only know about 'the Northern Lights' but there is a whole range of strange and spectacular things that happen at the higher latitudes.
And it's not all lights either.
Sound events often occur too, with and without lights.
I have heard and seen things that I would think were alien ships whizzing by or crashing if I wasn't an engineer with a physics education.
The amount of energy deflected and channeled by the earth's magnetic field is enormous and causes all sorts of light and sound shows at the higher latitudes.
Everyone wants to treat the fireball events seen around the time of the Dyatlov tragedy as special.
Sorry, that sort of thing is not special at all.
Go spend a couple winters up there and you'll see.
I have.
And I am not impressed at all by the stories.
They are as common as hurricanes in Florida.
Sure, some are bigger than others and some seasons have few and others a lot.
But what was seen was not unique."
Let's read about an incident that happened on March 31, 1959.
Sergey Sogrin, 4th year student in UPI, went out of the rescuers tent to relief himself at 4 am and saw a "fireball" (the emergency flight of the R-7 ICBM from Tyuratam to Kur).
He went back to the tent and alarmed Meshteryakov, who was the watchman at that time, and who woke up the rest of the rescuers.
They all went out to look at the fireball the way they were sleeping or else they will miss the show.
They were wearing socks only, and trying to step on branches that were laying around the tent.
Does it ring a bell?
What if Zolotaryov and Thibeaux-Brignolles put their valenki and went out to relief themselves, saw something in the sky, Zolotaryov might have rushed back to the tent to get his camera and called the rest of the hikers to observe whatever was happening in the sky.
I am speculating that whatever got the hikers out of the tent was in the sky and not an immediate threat because they would otherwise try to put on some shoes, clothes, and take their knives.
Dyatlov went out in his jacket and there was a knife in his pocket.
Kolevatov had his Finish knife in a sheath hung on his belt.
They would also have exited the tent through its designated opening, and not cutting through the sides, or else they wouldn't arrange and look up in the sky while Zolotaryov is shooting photos above their heads.
Cutting through the sides of the tent would call for running for their lives which did not happen.
The footprints show walking in the snow, not running.
While they watch the sky something goes terribly wrong.
But they are 9 young and physically fit people, 2 women amongst them.
Behavior analysis says that it is very probable somebody to try to stand up for the group.
If they were threatened with (machine) guns and ordered to strip (Dyatlov's jacket was found outside the tent), Kolevatov must have unbuckled his belt to remove the sheath and throw it in the snow.
If Slobodin snatched the blade from the sheath and try to confront the attackers, he would have been beaten to be incapacitated, not just for intimidation.
He received several heavy blows to the head, capable of knocking anyone out, he had low foot injury (two well-known abrasions remained on the lower third of the left shin), crack in the skull (on the left side) that looks very much like from a butt of an firearm, bilateral hemorrhages in the temporal muscles, abrasions and scratches on the forehead, abrasions on the left cheekbone and eyelid of the right eye.
Rustem had bloody nose too.
These injuries are consistent with boxing or wrestling i.e. hand to hand fight.
Rustem had bruised knuckles and laceration of the skin in the lower part of the right forearm (like Yuri Doroshenko).
Now lets turn our attention to the black plastic sheath that Yuri Yudin and Rimma Kolevatova identified as belonging to Alexander Kolevatov.
The knife was a present from Rimma to her brother and she knew it very well.
The knife was found in the tent, and the sheath was outside the tent.
What is more interesting is why the sheath was without a belt.
The owner had to unbuckle the belt, remove the sheath, and then put the belt back through the loops of the pants - this manipulation itself is rather strange, because a knife suspended in a sheath does not cause inconvenience.
You can quickly get used to it and stop noticing it, you can even sleep with it without any problems.
But Kolevatov for some reason decided to get rid of the sheath.
Apart from this, the knife was removed from the sheath outside the tent.
If Kolevatov really saved his friends from under the snow slump and cut his tent with his "fink" from the inside, the picture should have been the opposite - the empty sheath is in the tent, and the knife is outside it.
That's not the case though.
Something prompted Alexander Kolevatov to remove the knife in its sheath from the belt and throw it into the snow, as if they were unnecessary to him - and this action is completely absurd in the case of any non-criminal scenario of events.
A knife dramatically increases his chances of survival in an uncertain environment.
The logic in removing the sheath from the belt and throwing out the knife can only be in case of forced disarmament, i.e. execution of the team under threat of reprisal.
Another scenario - there is an avalanche and Kolevatov, the only one with his knife on the belt pulls it out, cuts the tent from the inside to secure an escape route, then throws the knife away to help his friends out.
The knife is registered to him and if he loses the "Finn" he can get up to 5 years of imprisonment (Article 182 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR in the redaction of 1926 with additions from 1933 and 1935).
Lets say Kolevatov is not rational.
But why stop outside and make the much more lengthy exercise of removing the empty sheath from his belt?
After Kolevatov put his "Finn" in the sheath on the snow, someone tried to use the knife.
There is no other explanation why the sheath is empty outside the tent.
Alexei Rakitin in his article "Why Rustem Slobodin froze first?" ("Почему Рустем Слободин замёрз первым?") in his online edition "Death is not far behind... " (my friend Andrei Andreev contributed this loose translation of "Смерть, идущая по следу…") makes a very good speculative reenactment of the events surrounding the first encounter of the group with their attackers.
Because of Rustem Slobodin's character, background, type of injuries and how he was found - Rakitin believes that Rustem Slobodin was the person who pulled the "Finn" out of the sheath and try to resist.
The moment when he must have tried that would be when he bent to remove his felt boots.
He was found with only one felt boot on his right foot.
Slobodin remained in the same felt-boots: the first he took off himself before grabbing the knife, and after the beating no one began to pull off the second felt from the unconscious body.
The other two hikers wearing felt boots were Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles and Semyon Zolotaryov.
In my scenario they have their boots on because they went out to relief themselves while the rest of the hikers were called out to look at "fireball" in the sky.
Even if the attackers did not care about their boots and marched the hikers down the slope after Rustem caused the commotion, I cannot explain why they didn't "loose" Zolotaryov's camera.
No matter who they were, the perpetrators must have known what a camera was for and that there could be incriminating photos that will survive the ordeal.
In Rakitin's scenario Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles and Semyon Zolotaryov were out when the tent was attacked and they hid or ran in the dark, and joined their friends later on when they were already marching down the slope.
I have it difficult to adhere to this version because the hikers were stalked before the confrontation.
I don't see a way that Thibeaux-Brignolles and Zolotaryov will come out unnoticed.
They couldn't have been out in their felt boots for more than 5-10 mins, and the traces of urine were not far away from the tent.
Nobody goes to pee in the untrampled snow.
The beating of Slobodin was the climax in the scene at the tent.
Suppressed by all seen and heard, not understanding the essence of what is happening, the hikers have already obediently performed the last command of their tormentors: "Get out of here while you can!"
Having picked up Rustem Slobodin, who was not yet fully come to life, the tourists pulled down the slope, intuitively realizing not to go in the direction of the labaz (cache), so their attackers would not vandalize the provisions they have left there.
The hikers did not run, the attackers told them to scram.
Their first reaction to the incident was quite understandable - they were relieved that the extremely shameful, disgusting and senseless scene of their general humiliation and beating had ended.
The weather was relatively warm -5°С to -7°С - and compared to the stress such cold did not seem prohibitive or even dangerous.
Very soon - literally a few dozen meters from the tent - the group was joined by the Thibeaux-Brignolles and Zolotaryov.
While going down the slope the reunited group was engaged in a animated discussion of the incident, a discussion that must have been very polemical and even conflicting.
Zolotaryov knew more than others and had the most extensive life experience, it he must have offered a plan, perhaps even imposed it on the rest of the group.
What this action plan was, we will never know and can only guess.
We know that the tracks down the slope converged, then parted, but kept a common direction, and the hikers were always within a earshot.
They certainly talked on the move, adrenaline high, vigorously proving and convincing each other of one thing or another.
So, what does it prove?
Objectively, nothing, or rather, just that the hikers descending the slope had the intention of sticking together.
However, for a psychologist this "swarming of the footsteps" ("Human Swarming and the future of Collective Intelligence") there is considerable meaning.
Hikers intuitively divided into groups "according to preferences" - when someone suggested a reasonable plan of action, supporters moved closer to him, when another reasonable proposal followed - people went to him.
This does not mean that the hikers ran from one leader to another, this is unconscious movement.
Unfortunately the tracks were not photographed and studied by the investigators.
If this were the case, after the discovery of the corpses, prints on the snow could have been matched to a specific person.
Imagine being able to say: here Lyudmila Dubinina walks for 150 m along with Dyatlov, and then moves closer to Zolotaryov and continues descending beside him; Kolevatov always remains near Semen Zolotaryov; Rustem Slobodin moves a little apart from the rest of the hikers and in a general does not seem to be involved in the conversation ...
We could have followed each of the group members down the slope and their body language could have said a lot about the last hours of their lives, about the clustering from the cedar in particular.
Rustem Slobodin was suffering from the cerebral trauma he received stumbled behind the group.
At a distance of about 1 km from the tent he fell into the snow.
Rustem lost consciousness and the ability to move about 20 mins after the attack.
It is well known that people who have suffered the heaviest knockout and who received a severe closed brain injury can recover and for some time demonstrate satisfactory condition (until the intracranial hemorrhage begins to put pressure on the meninges).
Soccer players can continue the game, the boxer can break into a fight ... well-known video recordings of athletes who received death craniocerebral injuries during the competition, but at the same time show complete self-control and external well-being for a while.
After 10-20 minutes, it ends with a call to the team physician first, and then - the paramedics.
This phenomenon of the seeming vigor of an already actually dying person is sometimes very accurately called "deferred death".
The speed of development of the process is significantly affected by the motor activity of the victim and the temperature of the environment - both slow the growth of hemorrhage.
No one noticed the disappearance of Rustem Slobodin in the dark - the group went ahead leaving their mortally wounded friend lagging behind.
Rustem was the first to die, this is clearly indicated by the high temperature of his body at the time of the fall in the snow.
Underneath was discovered the so-called "bed of the corpse", a layer of melted snow that forms from the warmth of the body.
Such a "bed of the corpse" was present only under Slobodin's body, the rest of the hikers found on the slope and at the cedar were already very cold by the time they fell to the ground.
The icy dead bed under the body of Rustem Slobodin is a strong argument against the sanitisation of the scene.
There are theories of the hikers being killed elsewhere and being brought on the slope of Mt Kholat Syakhl post mortem.
The perpetrators won’t bother to fake a dead bed on only one body, if it is possible to stage a thing like that at all.

Interview with Yuri's elder brother - Konstantin Krivonischenko

Yuri (Georgiy) Alekseevich Krivonischenko
Yuri Krivonischenko, along with Yuri Doroshenko, was found one and a half kilometers from the tent in the forest under the cedar.
It is believed that both Yuri died the very first, since all the outer clothing was cut off by other hikers in order to warm themselves.
According to the examination, Krivonischenko and Doroshenko died from hypothermia.
But at the same time, chopped branches were found right under the cedar.
Why both Yuri froze in a calm forest near a fire and in the presence of firewood is unclear.
Our correspondents met with Yuri's elder brother - Konstantin Krivonischenko.
UKYpBT6.jpg
Konstantin Krivonischenko with wife Nina Panteleevna
To many researchers of this tragedy, Yuri Krivonischenko seems to be a rather mysterious person.
It is known that he worked at the Mayak secret nuclear enterprise.
It is believed that he was a KGB recruit.
Yuri’s clothes turned out to be radioactive.
For some reason, Yuri Krivonischenko, as well as another victim - Semyon Zolotaryov, was buried separately from other hikers in a prestigious and already closed city cemetery.
YZnDnpi.jpg
Camping photo: Yuri in the center on a raft in a scarf
Yuri’s brother, Konstantin Alekseevich, now lives in Kiev.
This is what he told us.
– In 1959 I lived in the Urals.
I worked at the Verkhniy Tagil state district power station as shift supervisor of the electric shop.
There were three brothers in our family.
I am born in 1931, Yuri - 1935, Igor - 1539.
I was left alone, the oldest.

What to say about Yuri?
He was a sociable and cheerful guy.
He wrote very emotional poems.
His favorite song was "I love you, life, and I hope this is mutual".
And when he died, our mother found a piece of basalt, attached a silvered plate with an engraving on it with this line from Yuri’s favorite song.
She put it on a shelf in memory of Yuri.
– How did you find out about the Yuri's death?
– I don’t remember how it happened.
I know that they did not get in touch on time.
They began to look for them.
The bodies of the first five hikers were discovered.
And Yuri was among them.
Krivonischenko's father saved by Stalin
– It is known that your father was the construction manager of the Beloyarsk State District Power Station.
That is, the man is quite important, and he sought the truth about the death of Yuri, using his authority.
– Yes, he led a huge strategic construction site and was promoted to Major General.
I can tell you a story about his authority.
In 1949 father came under investigation.
Echelons with cement were brought to the construction site before the scheduled plan.
Since the warehouses had not yet been built, there was nowhere to unload the cement.
A case was brought against my father in the prosecutor's office and he could be punished very harshly.
But, as he later told us, they call him again to the prosecutor, and tell him that the case is closed, to continue work.
My father out of the corner of his eye saw a telegram on the prosecutor's desk saying: “Do not touch Krivonischenko. Joseph Stalin".
That's it about authority.
Therefore, father managed to get Yuri to be buried where the parents decided.
When father returned from the morgue with identification, he was simply silent.
I began to ask him. Have you seen Yuri?
He answered, yes, he saw him.
And he didn't uttered a word after this.
Before the funeral, Yuri was put in a closed zinc coffin.
He was not brought inside the house; they laid him in the yard.
Then they put the coffin in the church at the cemetery
There was no service. It was not allowed back then.
Then mom said - leave me alone. Everyone left the church.
She was there for about 10 minutes, probably crying.
Then they buried him and that's all...
– And after that, did you father eaver talked about Yuri in the morgue?
Was his color unusual?
– He did not say anything.
He didn’t want to upset us.
But the members of the search groups talked at the wake that the corpses were all black.
– But, probably, years later, this tragedy was remembered in the family, and your father said something about the reason hikers died?
– No, never.
All we knew was that the tent was torn with a knife, and they came out through these holes.
It was only later that conversations began that there could be some kind of military test.
They also said that it was a rocket that flew to Novaya Zemlya from Kazakhstan, but fell.
– Do you think that if your father never talked, and did not make assumptions about the death of Yuri, then perhaps he knew the whole truth?
Only it was such a truth that he could not divulge according to the harsh rules of the time?
– Everything is possible.
Perhaps it was warned. But I don't know.
Even when dad and I were gathering at the table, there was no talk about this topic.
If I asked my father, he avoided responding.
He died, dead, and that's it, an accident.
If father knew something, he didn't have time to say it.
He died suddenly in 1970.
He was 63 years old.
What did Yuri's father know from eyewitnesses
In this regard, it is interesting to recall Krivonischenko's father testimony from the case files.
We give it completely with all grammar errors.

Witness testified: After the funeral of my son on March 9, 1959, I had students over at the apartment, participants in the search for the nine hikers.
Among them were those hikers who at the end of January and the beginning of February were on an expedition in the north, a little bit to the south of Mount Otorten.
There were apparently at least two such groups, at least the participants of the two groups said that they had seen the light phenomenon that struck them on February 1 north of the location of these groups: the extremely bright glow of some kind of rocket or projectile.
The glow was so strong, that some of the hikers that were already inside the tent and getting ready to go to sleep, were alarmed by this glow, went out of the tent and observed this phenomenon.
After a while they heard a sound like a strong thunder from far away.
I don't know the names of those who said that, because I have never seen them before and I don’t know them, but obviously the students who saw and heard this light and sound phenomenon can be tracked, as there were several people, and it was not difficult to determine which groups were in the North at that time.
The students said that they had observed a similar phenomenon twice: on the first and the seventh of February 1959.
The students said that near the fire under the cedar were found belongings that were not on the deceased - my son and Doroshenko, at the same time, they didn't have shoes but there were socks laying around.
We can assume that there were more people at the cedar tree than the two found there dead.
The rest must have gone away when two
Krivonischenko (signature)
Sheet 274
were already dead, or if they were still alive and left at the campfire like a temporary base - then the abandoned did not see the clothes, since when freezing they would have probably put on everything that could get their hands on.
The students said that the fire at the cedar didn't go off due to lack of wood, but because nobody maintained it.
This, too, obviously could be either because people who were at the fire did not see what to do, or because they were already blind or dead (blinded) mistake signature.
They say that a few meters from the fire there were dry branches fallen from a tree that were not used.
In the presence of a fire, it was not possible not to see something that could be easily used, so being blind seems like possible explanation
Both hikers found at the campfire gradually lost sight (but very quickly) and although they could maintain the fire wile the wood lasted - they could not do it after they couldn't see what to do.
They froze after they were already dead.
This is only a guess of mine.

Interrogated (signature)
Shortly before his death, Yuri resigned
To clarify.
The Mayak dissaster occurred on September 29, 1957.
And Yuri, for sure, came under exposure there.
His relation with the company soon went south.
The family archive contains Yuri's letter of resignation dated August 15, 1958.
Mto6bKu.jpg
Yuri Krivonischenko letter of resignation
"Please provide me with payment and accept my resignation at my own request from the company PO Box 404/10 due to complete unwillingness to work in this system".
The resolution of the authorities on the letter is: "We can not find a reason for dismissal. It is necessary to fulfill the order of the head of the enterprise and begin work on the site "Ozero".
But Yuri still quit. He took a break and went to Otorten.
It is possible that Krivonischenko went on the expedition in the same clothes in which he had been at the enterprise.
This means that the radioactive elements found on his sweater and pants (only a sweater - ed. note) could be picked up while working on the rehabilitation site "Ozero".
– Other researchers say that your father, in response to a request to higher authorities, received a paper with the resolution "guilty party is punished"?
– I did not see such paper and did not hear anything about it.
– What do you think happened there?
– Most likely the tests were unsuccessful.
In those days, there were rumors.
Somewhere near this pass was a military unit.
And then in the middle of the night suddenly they saw some kind of glow in the sky.
The soldiers jumped out of the barracks.
And allegedly some soldiers went to a psychiatric hospital.
This is what people said.
– And what happened after 1959 in your family?
– Father was appointed construction manager of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in the Urals.
He built it. And when the installation of the nuclear equipment began, he was transferred to Pavlodar.
In the early 60s, he asked to be sent to Ukraine.
And he was returned to his homeland.

Yuri’s mom didn’t part with her son’s belongings
– What did your mother say about the tragedy?
– She never talked about this either.
– As for their mother, - Nina Panteleevna, the wife of Konstantin Alekseevich, entered into the conversation, - she always kept under her bed a suitcase with Yuri’s belongings - a sweatshirt, mittens and a hat, in which he went on this last trip.
A large portrait of Yuri hung in the room.
And on the day of his death, his mother sat in front of this portrait and cried silently.
I have to admit that we were afraid of this suitcase, suspecting that things in it could be radioactive.
And we have a child.
But my mother lived with a suitcase until 83 years of age and nothing.
And when she was gone, then we buried the suitcase.
– Why did you decide that there are radioactive items?
– At the moment I can’t even imagine why, but for some reason back in the time there were such fears.
– When Yuri’s things were found on the pass, it was on his pants and on his sweater that traces of radioactivity were discovered.
– After graduating from UPI, - Konstantin Alekseevich explained, - in the early summer of 1957, Yuri got a job at the now infamous Mayak plant.
I don’t know exactly what my brother was doing there, he said that he had soldiers under his command.
And soon at the enterprise there was an explosion of a storage.
There was a fairly large emission of radiation.
This is a known fact.
It is quite possible that he brought this radiation on clothes from the enterprise.
After all, if he had soldiers under his command, then he probably participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the explosion.
After that, he quit, got transferred somewhere and went on vacation.
He did not return from this vacation.
We thank Konstantin Alekseevich and Nina Panteleevna for the warm welcome and for sharing these memories.
We took some of Yuri's poems from the family archive.
They may seem imperfect to someone, but they tell us a lot about the character of this person.
Let Yuri rest in peace, as well as his comrades in this tragic expedition.

Yuri Krivonischenko with a friend. Perhaps it was to her that he dedicated his poems.
Skis in the corner, backpack on the closet,
Mandolin hanging on the wall.
Photo Album. Letters from friends,
Hiking treks - only in dreams…
Abandoned by fate to devil's horns:
There is no talk of mountains here,
Everyone calls me "fanatic"
They shed "crocodile tears".
And laugh, dipping noses in furs,
In life you will never know,
A snowstorm in the mountains,
How the wind plays the taiga.
You will never know grander,
When resting at the top,
And hundreds kilometers along
The green sea of the forests.
You will never see how rocks fall down,
How does the "Sayan vains" grow,
You have never seen the horns of a red deer
And roaring down stream from a clif.
You meet both winter and summer
Behind the double frame of the window,
And don't know the "power"
of sleeping by the fire in winter.
What do you boast about laughing at me?
With ignorance of your vast country?
Going to London, Paris, New York
To dance rock and roll, eat a couple of lobster
To buy fancy pants!
I feel sorry for you!
Y. Krivonischenko.
Campfire
I look at the burning fire.
Pink glowing flames won't last.
Comrades asleep, the day was dire.
Why can't you be with us?

Where on the world are you now
With a backpack and an ice axe,
What road are you dealt now
Always exploring the fate?
Maybe you’re making your way through the taiga
Knee-deep in the swamp waters,
Or wander under the ruthless sun
Somewhere in the Kazakhstan steppe?
Maybe you are in the snow of the Arctic,
And the blizzard sweeps your track?
Maybe this early morning
You meet the dawn in the Pamirs?
Covered with road dust
Hundreds of miles away from home,
Maybe your night is starless
And you don't think about me?
And you don’t know how often at nights
I move closer to the fire
And remembering you with longing,
I sing this sad song...
I look at the burning fire.
Pink glowing flames won't last.
Comrades asleep, the day was dire.
Why can't you be with us?
Y. Krivonischenko
Yuri Krivonischenko has beautiful sense of rhythm and rhyme that I haven't taken the time to match, translated word for word, except the strophe in italic, that repeats at the beginning and at the end of the Campfire poem.

Krivonischenko letter to Dyatlov
bb4zEdW.jpg?1
Hello everyone!
Happy New Year, hiking friends!
Let me wish you
Camping in faraway mountains
Ascending summits in the wild.
Let your backpacks be light,
weather always fine,
winter not too cold,
and summer to be mild.
The dirt not to bother you,
The sugar not to get wet,
When the river is boiling
And you go overboard.
Pants not to shred into tatters,
So you can patch them and go,
After drying your jacket at night
To have left more than a sleeve.
Your shoes to be good
Not a year, but dozens of years,
Wish your to leave your tracks
all over the map of Russia.
I’m going on a hike from the 22nd if temperatures below 30 degrees and will last no longer than 5-10 days, that is, there will remain about 10 days to finish my work, after which I go on vacation, and without finishing it the administration doesn't let me go.
In temperatures below 30 and strong wind, whatever needs to be done outside is canceled, same as at 40 degrees without wind.
Kolya Thibault probably knows about this.
We haven't worked for two days, how long will this go on depends on the temperatures.
I still have questions about the equipment - what of the public equipment I need to take, and what can I leave.
Also interested in the situation in Sverdlovsk with camera films, I do not have a single one.
Kolka Popov wrote about our expedition.
He knows.
Now I will write again.
If he has at least the slightest opportunity - he, of course, will join us.
I am in high spirits and good shape, I will be in Sverdlovsk between January 10 and 20.
I will keep in touch through UPI sports club.
I will go to the institute right after I arrive.
That's all.
I wonder how does the group come along, who stays, who doesn't.
I hope I can go with you, and if I don’t (which is not likely) you will get a telegram till the 20th.
Now about the money.
When, where, to whom and how much to send?
I’ll bring a bill of health with me.
December 29-30 we have a medical board (physical education), and I’ll get it from there.
That, in fact, is all I can say.
In all honesty, I missed my camp life very much and I dream of an expedition as a great blessing.
I have my own skis.
Greeting to all hikers.
December 27, 1958
P. S. In preparing the trip, do not forget to take into account the mandolin (for the weight), since I already play a little, and probably there will be N. Popov
(ed. note - Nikolay Popov is on the header photo playing the mandolin; the girl is Lida Grigorieva, not from Dyatlov group)
G. Krivonischenko
ed. note - Krivonischenko always signed G. for Georgiy. Yuri is a nickname used by his friends.

This year will be the 100th Anniversary of the Ural Federal University.

Eight of the nine members of Dyatlov group were students and graduates of UPI, now called UrFU.
