AMAZÔNIA

« I have never been to the Amazon rainforest, yet I know it, those mighty lungs on which the planet, in which we, depend, that verdant El Dorado, the dominion of all fantasy, of all extremes, of Herzog’s Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo.

At once familiar and mysterious, tranquil and troubling, fearsome and fragile…

A drug as addictive as it can be lethal.

The forests of Sebastião Salgado.

A bird trills, wind whispers in the treetops, passing men sing and squabble, women bathe, a storm rumbles, a plane flies overhead, rain falls on stone: these serendipitous sounds, though unschooled by orchestration or any form of arrangement, create a global harmony: the music of the forest.

And deep in the Amazon rainforests there is a spirit of nomadism, the moving from place to place, from shadow into light, from quiet stillness to brooding menace, pressing on we leave reality behind and plunge into the potent force of rituals and reveries.

I created this music so that it might serve as a tool box comprised of aural objects each different from the next, but also as an odyssey through elements – biological, natural, indigenous, orchestral, electronic – that sweep past, like a rainforest traversed and left behind, the evanescent vestiges of a time and a space that are boundless.

And amid this emerald ocean, the eternal human presence, as close to its heart as it is to ours.

As in Salgado’s photographs, nothing is black or white, everything here exists in the grey of infinite perspectives, with its countless contrasts, contentions, equivocations, torments, harmonies, its tenacity and resilience.

I have always been fascinated by the Amazon rainforests and so, as Blaise Cendrars replied when reminded he was writing about places he had never been, I, too, can say: “It is true, perhaps, that I have never been, but I will take you there… »

AMAZÔNIA – Release April 9th, 2021

After his live concert in VR at Notre Dame on 31 December, which attracted over 75 million spectators, Jean-Michel JARRE presents his new creation Amazônia.

Jean-Michel Jarre has composed and recorded a 52 minute musical score for ‘Amazônia’, a new project by award winning photographer and filmmaker Sebastião Salgado, for the Philharmonic Paris.

The exhibition launches on May 20th and will later travel to South America, Roma and London…

‘Amazônia’ is an immersive exhibition focussing on the Brazilian Amazon, featuring more than 200 photographs and other media by Salgado.

He travelled the region for six years, capturing the forest, the rivers, the mountains and the people who live there, and most of the work will be seen publicly for the first time.

At the heart of the exhibit is an invitation to see, hear and think about the future of biodiversity and the place of humans in the living world.

JMJs accompanying sound-creation is a symphonic world which will engulf visitors to the exhibit in the sounds of the forest.

Using a blend of electronic and orchestral instruments with other real-life natural sounds, the score has also been recorded in binaural audio, for a truly immersive experience.

Appointed ambassador to UNESCO in 1993, Jean-Michel Jarre is involved in remarkable projects for tolerance and cultural pluralism as well as for the defence of nature and the environment.

The exhibition will then travel around the world, from Roma, to Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro and London.

Après son concert live en réalité virtuelle à Notre Dame le 31 décembre dernier, qui a réuni plus de 75 millions de spectateurs, JEAN-MICHEL JARRE présente sa nouvelle création Amazônia.

Jean-Michel Jarre a composé et enregistré une partition musicale de 52 minutes éponyme de l’exposition Amazônia, le nouveau projet du photographe et cinéaste Sebastião Salgado présenté à la Philharmonie de Paris.

L’exposition ouvrira ses portes le 20 mai pour se déplacer ensuite vers l'Amérique du Sud, Rome et Londres.

Amazônia est une exposition immersive sur l'Amazonie brésilienne, qui présente plus de 200 photographies et autres médias de Salgado.

Il a parcouru la région pendant six ans, capturant la forêt, les rivières, les montagnes et les gens qui y vivent, et la plupart de ses œuvres seront présentées au public pour la première fois.

Au cœur de l'exposition se trouve une invitation à voir, entendre, réfléchir à l'avenir de la biodiversité et à la place de l'homme dans le monde du vivant.

L’exposition Amazônia marque le premier pas du Musée de la musique-Philharmonie de Paris dans le domaine de la bioacoustique.

La musicalité si contrastée de la forêt renaît ainsi dans une œuvre de Jean-Michel Jarre composée pour l’exposition, diffusée en stéréo au fil du parcours photographique.

A mi-chemin entre la musique concrète et électronique, cette création a également été enregistrée en audio binaural, pour une expérience véritablement immersive au casque.

Jean-Michel Jarre explique : « Je ne suis jamais allé dans la forêt amazonienne mais je la connais, ce poumon de la planète dont nous dépendons, cet eldorado vert, lieu de tous les fantasmes et de tous les extrêmes, celle d’Aguirre, de Fitzcarraldo et de tant d’autres.

Familière et mystérieuse, sereine et inquiétante, puissante et vulnérable...

Une drogue addictive et fatale...

La forêt de Sebastião Salgado.

Un oiseau chante, le vent s’engouffre dans les feuillages, des hommes qui passent, chantent et discutent, des femmes se baignent, l’orage gronde, un avion passe, la pluie tombe sur la pierre, tous ces sons aléatoires et ignorants d’une orchestration ou d’un agencement quelconque forment pourtant une harmonie globale: la musique de la forêt.

Il y a aussi dans la forêt amazonienne la dimension du nomadisme, passer d’un endroit à un autre, du sombre à la lumière, d’une douce quiétude à une menace latente, avancer en laissant la réalité derrière soi pour s’enfoncer dans la puissance des rites et des rêves.

J’ai construit cette musique à la fois comme une boîte à outils, constituée d’objets sonores différents les uns des autres, comme une déambulation aussi, à travers des éléments organiques, naturels, ethniques, orchestraux, électroniques, qui ne feraient que passer comme dans une forêt qu’on traverse et qu’on laisserait derrière nous, vestiges passagers d’un temps et d’un espace sans fin.

Et puis dans cet océan vert, la présence humaine éternelle, présente en son cœur comme dans le nôtre.

Comme dans les photos de Salgado rien n’est ni noir ni blanc, tout est ici dans le gris aux perspectives infinies, avec son lot de contrastes, de controverses, d’ambiguïtés, de douleurs, d’harmonie, de résistance et de résilience.

J’ai toujours été fasciné par la forêt amazonienne et à l’instar de Blaise Cendrars à qui l’on faisait remarquer qu’il décrivait un endroit où il n’était jamais allé, comme lui je répondrai: « Je n’y suis peut être jamais allé mais je vais vous y emmener..»

Nommé ambassadeur à l’Unesco en 1993, Jean-Michel Jarre s’implique dans des projets remarquables pour la tolérance et le pluralisme culturel comme pour la défense de la nature et de l’environnement.

L’exposition voyagera ensuite à travers le monde, en s’installant notamment à Rome, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro et Londres.

My new album AMAZÔNIA is out today.

 

I was immediately intrigued by the invitation to create a special composition to accompany the exhibition of Sebastião Salgado’s great work as I am a huge admirer of his vision and relentless contribution to preserve the Amazonian forest.

 

I wanted to avoid the ethnomusicological approach, or creating background music.

 

So I conceived a sort of toolbox containing musical elements - orchestral and electronic - intended to recreate or evoke the timbre of natural sounds, to which I added sounds from the environment, and finally ethnic sources.

 

I composed Amazonia in one go, day and night, in front of Sebastiãos photos scrolling in a loop in front of me, immersing myself in this immensity, familiar and mysterious, serene and disturbing, powerful and vulnerable...
