Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Part 48 🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 48: Memories of ✨”Pyramid”, the Alpine Version | KKL Lucerne, Switzerland, 2023✨ “I was already a professional musician, and I had already tried almost every instrument under the sun in my search for “the right one” when I discovered the harp. Pyramid was one of the first pieces to introduce me to the immense and mysterious power of this unusual and fundamentally very archaic instrument. Since then, I have played the piece thousands of times, yet every performance produces an entirely new version. The form remains more or less the same, but the notes within are different every time. The curious thing is that, no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot remember the previous versions. This means I have to switch off my mind and simply let it flow, watching my hands as they allow the piece to take a new shape. And then there always was—and still is—Walter Keiser on drums. It is much the same for him, and we have tremendous fun surprising each other every time with changes both large and small. Whenever someone new joins our ensemble, something different emerges once again. We called the version in this video the “Alpine Version” because, while we were playing the final sequence, Isabel Gehweiler suddenly began to yodel. That inspired the closing section you hear here. Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Part 47 🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 47: Memories of ✨"Micro-Macro", the Romanian Version | KKL Lucerne, Switzerland, 2023✨ "The song 'Micro-Macro' also dates back to our early days and was a frequent 'guest' in our concert programmes. As with all our other songs, each new line-up of the ensemble gave rise to a new version. One of the most important elements of our music has always been what we call 'thematic improvisation.' This means that there is a more or less clearly defined song structure, but it is interpreted afresh each time and filled with the musicians’ own personal ideas. This can even lead to entirely new sections emerging. It keeps the music alive and fresh—not only for the audience, but for us as well. In this version, which we called 'the Romanian version,' our wonderful violist Sorin Spasinovici plays a fantastic solo that transports us, for a moment, to his native Romania. In this sense, our music is like a house with many rooms. With every new musician who joins us, another room is added to the existing building, and the whole house takes on a new shape. Over the course of its almost 50-year history, our house has grown very large indeed…" – Andreas
