My father was a highly unusual person. For him, there was really only one thing: music. If I wanted to have a relationship with him, I had to make music with him. Sometimes I wished that, instead, we could go fishing together or simply do the kinds of things other fathers do with their children. Yet it was precisely through music that I discovered something unique: it became a form of communication between us—on a very deep level. There was, however, one occasion when he took me on a hike as a little boy. Our path led us through the countryside surrounding the small village of Hirzel. We walked along a stream, and on the way he told me about Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the 'Pastorale' and the story he associated with the work. That hike left such a profound impression on me that the 'Pastorale' remains one of my absolute favourite pieces of music to this day. At the same time, I made another profound discovery: I experienced the power of storytelling through music. That experience has had a decisive influence on my own musical work. Today, when someone asks me about my profession, I answer: 'I am a storyteller.'" – Andreas

Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Part 42 🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 42: Memories of ✨“Under One Moon“ with Abdullah Ibrahim | Basel, Switzerland, 2001✨ "It was very sad when the news reached us of his passing away on June 15, 2026, at the age of 91, at Lake Chiemsee in Germany. As I have reported before, his playing inspired me from my early youth. When I first heard one of his concerts live, I was somehow surprised, because he played the piano very much the way I did—only worlds better of course. It was his hypnotic left-hand ostinato figures and the harmonized melodies in his right hand that felt so familiar to me. Later, during his years in exile, we supported his projects against the brutal apartheid regime. Through our own music, we had already developed a strong connection to South Africa from the early 1980s onward. Many years later, in the early 2000s, a wonderful collaboration emerged. It began with my album COSMOPOLY, which features three of our improvisations. This was followed by a tour through various cities across Europe. The time spent travelling with Abdullah remains unforgettable for me. With his passing, an important voice for a better world has fallen silent. And yet, his message continues to resonate through his music." – Andreas
