Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – The Years In The Forest

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 15:

Memories of

“The Years In The Forest“ | Montreux Jazz Festival, 1993

Dear friends,

On Thursday's livestream on YouTube, I would like to invite you to reflect with me on the question: Is music merely an acoustic decoration—pleasant to have, just a form of entertainment?

Of course, music is all of that as well.

But it is more—much more?

And if so, what are its hidden, underlying powers?

What can it bring about beyond entertaining us?

What do you think?

What significance does music have in your life?

How do you listen to music?

How would you describe its effect on you?

I might have a few surprises in store for you …

I look forward to your comments, questions, and thoughts.

Please keep your contributions as concise as possible; otherwise, it will be difficult for me during the livestream.

Unfortunately, we will have to disable the chat function again this time.

I still need a bit of practice speaking and reading simultaneously.

So, until Thursday…

Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Belladonna

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 16:

Memories of

“Belladonna“ | Montreux Jazz Festival, 2011

„Belladonna at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2011: This is another example of how we take the main elements of an existing song and then wander off in complete new territory.

We call this thematic improvisation.

For this approach to work, the foundations of the music has to be deliberately kept simple, not to engage the intellectual mind, but rather to release all expectation and allow the music to take shape of its own accord, as far as ever possible.

By setting aside the urge to conquer the instrument and to display acrobatic virtuosity, you set aside much of your ego.

This creates space for the unexpected — which, at times, can lead to a rare and precious discovery“ – Andreas

Are you ready for the next YouTube livestream with Andreas?

Feel free to ask your questions and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Andreas will be happy to answer them tomorrow…

Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – See, my Love

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 17:

Memories of

“See, my Love“ | Montreux Jazz Festival, 2011

„See, my Love… from the album Dancing with the Lion has always been a highlight of our programs because of its intimate mood.

The same was true at our birthday concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2011.

Even though the song still carries this loving power, this particular recording also makes us very sad.

That special evening is one of the last moments of making music together.

Daniel passed away after a serious illness on October 7, 2017.

We all miss him deeply, with his exceptionally deep and gentle nature.

R.I.P. Daniel...“ – Andreas

Unfortunately, the YouTube livestream with Andreas planned for tomorrow will not take place.

He’s looking forward to going live with you again soon.

Stay tuned!

Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Song of Isolde

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 18:

Memories of

“Song of Isolde“ | Montreux Jazz Festival, 2011

„For the first time, the album ‚Eolian Minstrel‘ included many songs with vocals and lyrics.

The musical collaboration with the American singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson was incredibly fluid and natural.

This time, the band had a ‚rock-flavor‘ to it, that provided a great foundation for the songs and was able to do justice to the sometimes mildly confrontational lyrics, which was somewhat unusual for AVAF.

In a historical context, however, I also felt this was important to share.

‚Song of Isolde‘ draws on a Celtic British saga, which tells of Isolde and Tristan, who were forced to flee into the forests to escape society because their love was forbidden.

After some time, however, Isolde realized that they had to confront the fight against their oppressors.

Successfully crossing the dangerous ‚Iron River‘ upon their return strengthened their determination.“ – Andreas

Andreas Vollenweider: harps, vocals

Eliza Gilkyson: vocals, guitar, keys, percussion

Walter Keiser: drums

Marc Portmann: guitars

Eberhard Hahn: wind instruments

Chris Wiesendanger: keyboards

The fourth YouTube livestream with Andreas is coming up!

Tune in as he answers your questions and shares his thoughts live with the community.

You can leave your questions and comments right here under this video.

He’ll read through everything.

Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Harvest

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 19:

Memories of

“Harvest“ | Montreux Jazz Festival, 1993

"It was the time of the album 'Eolian Minstrel', the singer of the winds.

After decades of instrumental music, I felt a strong desire to devote myself to a project in which vocals and lyrics would play an important role.

I myself was a passionate listener of music of the great singer-songwriters and had many ideas for lyrical content.

The first steps were to find a form in which these contents would remain as open as the music, expressed through a more metaphorical and abstract imagery.

I had the great good fortune to inspire the American singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson to join our project.

We complemented each other wonderfully, and her musical competence and versatility was/is overwhelming.

Her voice has an incredible power and trustworthiness.

I was very happy when we were also able to embark on a world tour together.

After we had truly travelled 'the world', we finally performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1993.

The song 'Harvest' is an excerpt of that concert.

The band was also outstanding.

In addition to her voice, Eliza was a true multi-instrumentalist, playing keyboards, guitar, and percussion.

Of course, Walter Keiser played the drums, Marc Portmann enriched the music with sometimes very rock-oriented elements through a wide range of guitars.

Eberhard Hahn contributed to its melodic richness with his boundless arsenal of wind instruments, and Chris Wiesendanger conjured up soundscapes with his keyboards.

'Harvest' has a rock feel to it, the lyrics are somewhat more confrontational, but I thought that couldn’t really do any harm.

After all, our music is otherwise always of a conciliatory nature." – Andreas

📹 Until further notice, there will be no livestreams on YouTube with Andreas.

He looks forward to sharing an update soon and announcing what’s next.
