Andreas Vollenweider - Treasures of the Archives – Part 30

🎵Treasures of the Archives – Part 30:

Memories of

"Come to the quiet place" | Zurich, 2020

"October 2020.

A date of global significance.

We had just released our album ‚Quiet Places‘ and my first novel ‚Im Spiegel der Venus‘, when the coronavirus struck.

Fortunately, we managed to give a private concert for a small audience at the Millers Studio in Zurich, Switzerland, only days before the lockdown, and were still able to celebrate both releases.

‚Come to the Quiet Place‘ is from the album of (almost) the same name.

I must confess, at that time, I was going through a somewhat floating phase.

That probably has to do with my age as well — after all, I am a grandfather…

I had already begun some time earlier to enjoy this sense of floating; the music still has some kind of form, but it is a drifting one, like the waves of the sea that surge toward you only to withdraw again.

This piece is also a good example of how we make music: there are structural elements, but we remain completely open in how — or if — we shape them.

Unexpected elements may appear — and disappear again.

We call this ‚thematic improvisation‘.

You could say it is something like the secret formula behind our music…" – Andreas

“Angoh!“ | Bonn, Germany, 2022

"June 5, 2022, Bonn, Germany.

The Covid crisis had passed, and we were finally able to perform larger concerts again — what immense joy.

There are moments when you feel, to your very core, what deeper purpose you have, and you are lifted up and carried into an indescribable flight.

The boundaries between audience and musicians dissolve into a wonderful sense of unity.

What could be more beautiful…“ – Andreas

Father & Son Improvising | Zurich, Switzerland, 1979

"Through the many hours of improvising together with my father, it became self-evident to me at a very early age that music is a language through which one can express the truly important things that lie deep within our soul.

There was a time, however, when I would have much preferred to go fishing with my father, or cycling, or simply do all the things other children did with their dads.

But he was so profoundly immersed in music that, quite simply, nothing else existed.

If you wanted to have a relationship with him, you had to make music with him.

And so it was in music that we grew close—perhaps in a way we would never otherwise have experienced.

Victor Hugo, the French poet, expressed it like this: ‚Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.‘

The recordings for this short video were made in 1979.

We were playing in the Grossmünster in Zurich, on the organ that my father had once designed and on which he played until the end of his life.

It was also there that we recorded our only album together, ‚Traumgarten (Garden of Dreams)‘.

The artwork for the album was created by my grandfather — so in a way, it’s a bit of a family album.“ – Andreas

“Polyhymnia“ | KKL Lucerne, Switzerland, 2023

The song ‚Polyhymnia‘ is dedicated to one of the nine Muses with the same name from Greek mythology.

She represents the healing powers of contemplative, hymn-like music.

Here's an excerpt from the concert at the KKL in Lucerne, Switzerland, in October 2023.

The band members are: Andreas Vollenweider playing his magical harp, Isabel Gehweiler on cello, Sorin Spasinovici playing the viola, Oliver Keller on the classical guitar, and Daniel Kueffer on bass clarinet.

Memories of

"Night Fire Dance" | Montreux Jazz Festival, 2011

"Our music is intentionally kept very simple, because this has the effect that we must constantly breathe new life into it — otherwise it becomes boring for us and for you.

We always have to surprise each other.

This piece is another example of how we take an existing song, one we may have played hundreds of times, and bring it into a free creative space where anything is possible again.

This way, something new always emerges; the songs are never played the same way twice.

We call this thematic improvisation.

There is a red thread we can use — or not…" – Andreas

Memories of

“Lunar Pond“ | KKL Lucerne, Switzerland, 2023

„The song ‚Lunar Pond‘ has accompanied us throughout all these years on our adventurous journey with this music.

It was inspired by the storytelling power of classical Chinese music.

The moon, too, plays a recurring role in these stories, reflecting itself in the depths of a pond and inviting us to pause and linger.

It reveals how, alongside their remarkable diligence, the Chinese people also possess a deeply romantic spirit.“ – Andreas

"The Journey" – fifty years of enchanted music | Concerts 2027

What a story!

For nearly half a century, Andreas Vollenweider has captivated millions of people around the world with his unique music.

And to this day, audiences continue to gather from every corner of the globe to share the experience of his concerts.

So what is the secret behind music that appears to transcend time?

When the journey began in the mid-1970s, the public’s enthusiastic response was explained as a reflection of the spirit of the times.

Yet over the following 50 years, that spirit has constantly changed — and still this music has endured, passed on from one generation to the next.

It must clearly touch something in many people that reaches far deeper than any zeitgeist or passing trend.

Back then, The New York Times sensed in Vollenweider’s music a “profoundly positive otherworldliness” — and perhaps this is exactly where the secret of its enduring success lies.

Vollenweider says: “Especially in times when we are all confronted to a great extent with threatening developments in the world, yet without truly being able to take action ourselves, we seem to have a strong need for moments in which we can restore and strengthen our deep-rooted confidence in life.

In that respect, music has always been my own survival strategy too.”

For the 73-year-old Vollenweider, the 2027 tour, “The Journey – die Reise,” is also a deeply grateful revisiting of the stages of his extraordinary adventure.

With their remarkable versatility and virtuosity, these five musicians can create the rich sound of a full orchestra.

With its powerful sound, Andreas Vollenweider’s special harp can fill even the largest halls with ease — ultra-deep basses, hypnotic grooves, crystal clarity, melodic beauty, and a deeply moving presence.

It is within these soundscapes that his four musical companions move and take flight

The complementary force comes from Walter Keiser, whose drumming has provided the heartbeat of this music from the very beginning; Daniel Küffer, likewise the band’s multi-instrumentalist for almost 30 years, with a virtuoso focus on a wide variety of wind instruments; Isabel Gehweiler, whose cello playing has for many years brought emotional warmth, depth and fullness to the music; and Oliver Keller, who expands Vollenweider’s world of sound with a wide array of string instruments, ranging from delicate filigree to powerful, rock-infused energy.

The many people behind the scenes — in organisationsound, and technical production — have likewise been part of the “Friends”, most of them from the earliest days.

Together, they create something that goes far beyond a concert ensemble: a sense of family that, together with the audiences creates the Vollenweider experience.

What can audiences expect from the 2027 tour?

Andreas and his companions will open the gate to their musical treasure trove, sharing the most legendary gems from 50 years of this extraordinary sonic universe.
